A simplified downwash dynamics model is developed which is used to train an RL policy to dribble a soccer ball and it is demonstrated that the policy transfers to real world deployment.

Abstract

Although multicopter drones are traditionally designed for"perception-only"tasks, like mapping and exploration, recent work has sought to develop Unmanned Aerial Manipulators (UAMs) to solve mobile manipulation tasks. Aerial manipulation performance can be impacted by"downwash,"the airflow produced by propellers, but current state-of-the-art UAMs either ignore downwash or treat it as a disturbance. Instead, is it possible to actively use downwash as a tool during manipulation? We design a drone soccer task to explore the feasibility of downwash-based manipulation. Specifically, we develop a simplified downwash dynamics model which we use to train an RL policy to dribble a soccer ball. We further demonstrate that our policy transfers to real world deployment. This work provides key insights into novel manipulation capabilities for multicopters.

MonoRace: Winning Champion-Level Drone Racing with Robust Monocular AI

Autonomous drone racing represents a major frontier in robotics research. It requires an artificial intelligence (AI) that can run onboard lightweight flying robots under tight resource and time constraints while pushing the physical system to its limits. The state of the art in this area consists of a system with a st...

RoboCap: A New Platform for Egocentric Robot Learning

Despite its promise for scaling robot learning, egocentric manipulation data is still scarce today. Collection at scale requires vertically integrating ergonomic hardware with centimeter-precise 3D algorithms, at a precision that has not been publicly demonstrated. To address this gap, we introduce RoboCap, a 250\,g si...

Scooter-Driving Humanoid Robot: Sim-to-Real Transfer Through Deep Reinforcement Learning

This paper presents a simulation-to-reality (sim-to-real) transfer process, allowing a full-sized humanoid robot to autonomously balance a two-wheeled scooter and track operator-supplied heading commands through a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) policy, including while carrying a human passenger for the first time. T...

Learning Coordinated Visuomotor Box-Pushing from Solo Demonstrations

Multi-robot imitation learning, particularly in settings where visuomotor policies are deployed in a communication-free, onboard decentralised style, represents an attractive paradigm. However, its realisation remains insufficiently understood, largely due to the difficulty of collecting collective demonstrations, sinc...

RAIBO-Wagon: Real-Time Navigation System for a Legged Robot Towing a Wagon

Legged robots have demonstrated advanced capabilities across a wide range of real-world tasks, yet much of this progress concerns the robot controlling only itself. Once the robot is coupled to an external object -- particularly an underactuated one -- the dynamics of the combined assembly become more complex. Towing a...
