If Gravity's Direction Merely Lagged at the Speed of Light, the Earth's Semi-Major Axis Would Double in 663.55 Revolutions ── tilting the direction of the Sun's pull toward the motion by the angle of aberration makes the orbit grow every revolution, with sqrt a increasing in proportion to the number of revolutions ── the separator is whether only the direction is delayed or the velocity terms are included too ── [Paper 909]
Abstract
If gravity travels at a finite speed, the direction of the Sun’s pull should tilt slightly as in aberration, and it is easy to assume that the tilt is too small to change anything. This paper steps an orbit in a model where only the direction of gravity is tilted by the angle of aberration, and counts what that small tilt accumulates revolution by revolution. No new theorem or law is claimed. Scope of this paper (scope note): No new theorem or law is claimed──the argument that a lag in gravity’s direction would make orbits unstable (Laplace 1805), the cancellation of that lag to high order by velocity-dependent terms in general relativity (Carlip 2000), and the formula for how a small tangential force lengthens the semi-major axis of a circular orbit are all known. General relativity is not computed──the cancellation by velocity terms is stated as a known result and not counted. No real change of orbit is claimed──the Earth’s beta is a model value, 2pi astronomical units divided by the sidereal year; observed changes of the semi-major axis and observational bounds on the speed of gravity are not entered. The condition of keeping the yearly growth under 1 m is only a provisional yardstick. The model is kept to one──the magnitude of the force stays GM/r^2 and only its direction is tilted; energy loss by gravitational waves is not included. Relation to earlier papers: Paper 524 showed that the wind on a sail and the apparent place of a star are one and the same formula, and that the Earth’s beta=9.935118x10^-5 gives an annual aberration of 20.492653 arcseconds──here the same beta is applied not to light but to the tilt of gravity’s direction. Paper 901 showed that aberration keeps the full solid angle 4pi of the sky while rearranging it──here a tilt of the same form adds energy to the orbit every revolution. Paper 28 showed that the exponent 3/2 of Kepler’s third law is not a dimension but a scaling exponent──here the period grows by that 3/2, so the 663.55 counted in revolutions and the 1201.46 counted in years separate. Paper 42 showed that the G and c^5 of the quadrupole formula for gravitational waves cannot be separated──gravitational waves carry energy away and shrink orbits, whereas the lag of direction here adds energy and lengthens them: the sign is opposite. Paper 83 showed that relativity with a maximum speed follows from Galileo’s relativity principle alone──here the consequence of the lag of direction alone is counted for gravity travelling at that maximum speed. What is added is stepping the orbit with only the tilt of direction and showing that sqrt a grows in proportion to the revolutions, setting untilted and backward-tilted controls, obtaining the revolutions and years to doubling for the Earth’s beta and showing that the constant-speed estimate is too small, and placing the separator on direction alone versus velocity terms too. First, the tilt of direction lengthens the orbit every revolution──the tilt angle v/c_g gives the force a component along the motion; at c_g=1000 the relative growth of the semi-major axis in the first revolution was 1.260737x10^-2 (formula (1+2pi/c_g)^2-1=1.260585x10^-2) (Section 2). Second, what grows is sqrt a, in proportion to the number of revolutions──since the speed falls as a^-1/2, sqrt a=1+2pi N/c_g; in the stepped orbit sqrt a grew by 0.006283220 per revolution at c_g=1000, matching the formula’s 2pi/c_g=0.006283185 (Section 2). Third, without the tilt it does not grow, and tilted backward it shrinks──the untilted orbit still has semi-major axis 1.000000000 after 20 revolutions, and tilted backward at c_g=200 it shrank to 0.470367 in 10 revolutions (formula 0.470378) (Section 3). Fourth, and this is the core. The Earth’s orbit doubles its semi-major axis in 663.55 revolutions──applying to gravity the beta=9.935118x10^-5 from which Paper 524 obtained an annual aberration of 20.492653 arcseconds, the relative growth per revolution is 1.248484x10^-3, the growth in the first year 186770.5 km, and the semi-major axis doubles in 663.55 revolutions (Section 4). Fifth, counting in revolutions or in years gives different numbers until doubling──the period grows as the 3/2 power of the semi-major axis, so counted in years it takes 1201.46 years. The estimate ln2/(4pibeta)=555.19 with constant speed is smaller than the correct number of revolutions (Section 4). Sixth, the separator is whether only the direction is delayed or the velocity terms are included too──delaying only the direction lengthens the orbit. In general relativity, velocity-dependent terms are known to cancel this lag of direction; without that cancellation, gravity travelling at the speed of light would change planetary orbits on a scale of a thousand years (Section 5). If gravity’s direction merely lagged at the speed of light, the Earth’s orbit would grow every revolution and its semi-major axis would double in 663.55 revolutions. Tilting the direction of the Sun’s gravity toward the motion by the angle of aberration, the orbit gained energy every revolution and sqrt a grew in proportion to the revolutions──untilted it did not grow, tilted backward it shrank, and the stepped orbit matched the formula sqrt a=1+2pi N/c_g. Applying to gravity the Earth’s beta, which for light is only a shift of 20.492653 arcseconds, it accumulated 1.248484x10^-3 every revolution, and the semi-major axis doubled in 663.55 revolutions, or 1201.46 years──a small angle accumulates with every revolution. Placed among the earlier papers──the beta of Paper 524 and the form of aberration of Paper 901 were applied to gravity’s direction, and the 3/2 of Paper 28 separated revolutions from years. To be honest──this is a model delaying only the direction; the general-relativistic cancellation is stated as known, and no real change of orbit is claimed.
