Abstract
Abstract Theories of translation often posit that in order to translate between languages it is necessary to translate first into an interlanguage of one kind or another. This chapter examines not only the invention of a new kind of interlanguage but also the invention of some of the object languages that the interlanguage will be used to translate between. Machine learning creates vector spaces that geometrically plot out relationships among tokens (words) in large language models. There is a growing project to use the word embeddings in these vector spaces to understand the languages of nonhuman animals. In the most utopian versions of these projects, machine learning will not only allow for two-way communication between humans and other species but could even help mitigate aspects of the climate crisis.
The results are packaged in the Greenfield Startup Model (GSM), which explains the priority of startups to release the product as quickly as possible, and the need to shorten time-to-market, by speeding up the development through low-precision engineering activities.
