Abstract

Low student self-confidence in rural schools frequently hinders active participation, yet empirical studies addressing everyday teacher-led classroom interventions in these settings remain scarce. This study aims to analyze teachers’ efforts in developing the self-confidence of third-grade students at SD Negeri 075048 Lasara Siwalubanua and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in their execution. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach utilizing purposive sampling, engaging one third-grade teacher as the primary informant and six students as supporting informants. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, all evaluated through expert judgment. The data were systematically analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that teacher strategies encompassed offering participation opportunities, giving positive verbal reinforcement, nurturing a safe classroom climate, and delivering gradual guidance to reticent learners. Supporting factors included teacher care and a conducive learning environment, whereas inhibiting factors stemmed from performance anxiety, peer ridicule, and tight instructional time constraints. Consequently, consistent teacher facilitation plays an essential role in cultivating primary school students' emotional courage and classroom engagement.
