Abstract

What a buyer abroad already believes before a seller says anything A buyer three time zones away decides about a supplier before the supplier has said anything, on evidence the supplier did not know was being read. A small manufacturer trying to sell abroad believes the problem is reach, and puts its effort into approaching more buyers. The buyers it already reached are the evidence against that. They arrived at a directory entry or a catalogue page, spent well under a minute, formed a conclusion, and left without asking anything, and the seller never learned that any of it happened. What decided the outcome was the visible surface: what could be found, in what order, in how long, and what a reasonable person concluded from it. A specification in units the buyer does not use, a photograph that shows the product and not the packing, a page that leaves the minimum order unanswered, a certificate that a compliance officer will need and that nobody mentioned. None of that is fixed by sending more messages, because a message reaches one buyer while the surface reaches every buyer who looks. The repair is to sit in the buyer's chair, reconstruct the surface strictly in the order a buyer meets it, and mend the first thing that stops a reasonable person. A chat model helps with exactly one part of that work, which is language: restating a specification in a destination's own units, listing the questions a page leaves open, drafting a reply to an enquiry that has already arrived. It must never be asked what a market wants or what an importing country requires, because the first is a claim about a population nobody measured and the second is a determination that changes by product and by date. Audiences: The seller who is getting silence and calls it reach — Has a listing and a page and has sent messages, and has heard nothing back from most of them. Concludes the answer is more buyers and more messages, because the alternative conclusion is not visible from the seller's side of the table: nobody writes back to say which sentence stopped them. The person answering an enquiry that has already arrived — Has a real buyer asking a real question, and answers it quickly and warmly and incompletely, in the seller's own units, without the certificate the buyer's second reader will ask for. The thread ends after the second message and nobody says why. The owner about to send a sample — Is about to spend real money putting an object on a plane, on the strength of a thread that has not established whether this buyer can order at all, and without any record of what the sample is supposed to prove or what the production run will have to match. Exploring the Sources of Waste in Kanban Software Development Projects

The application of agile software methods and more recently the integration of Lean practices contribute to the trend of continuous improvement in the software industry. One such area warranting proper empirical evidence is a project’s operational efficiency when using the Kanban method. A preliminary research model is presented for helping the consequent replication of the study. The results from the empirical analysis suggest Kanban can be an effective method in visualizing and organizing the current work, but does not prevent waste from creeping in, although the overall project outcome may be successful.
