Abstract

Students’ low critical thinking skills in IPAS instruction are caused by a teacher-centered learning process and a lack of active student engagement in exploring real-world phenomena. This study aims to determine the effect of outdoor learning on the critical thinking skills of fifth-grade students in the IPAS subject at SD Negeri 1 Natar, South Lampung. A quantitative quasi-experimental approach with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used, involving 56 students divided into an experimental class (Grade V B, 27 students) using outdoor learning and a control class (Grade V A, 29 students) using a scientific approach aided by visual media, selected through purposive sampling. The instrument was an essay-based critical thinking test based on Ennis’s indicators on ecosystem material. The Independent Samples t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, so H0 was rejected and H1 accepted. The experimental class obtained an N-Gain of 0.63 (moderate) with a posttest mean of 80.04, higher than the control class’s N-Gain of 0.57 (moderate) with a posttest mean of 71.55. It is concluded that outdoor learning has a significant effect on fifth-grade students’ critical thinking skills.
