TL;DR

The measured length and circumference of the metatarsal bone in 330 male broilers and whole-genome data were analyzed to identify genetic regions associated with these traits and identified candidate markers that may support future breeding efforts focused on improving broiler leg traits.

Abstract

Simple Summary Fast-growing broilers may experience leg problems when rapid body weight gain exceeds skeletal development, potentially affecting movement, welfare, and production. We measured the length and circumference of the metatarsal bone in 330 male broilers and analyzed whole-genome data to identify genetic regions associated with these traits. Integrating multiple complementary analyses identified 55 candidate markers for metatarsal length and 62 for circumference, including three markers shared by both traits. We also identified 64 candidate genes, including genes that may be related to bone, muscle, and energy metabolism. In an exploratory analysis within the same population, the selected markers showed greater trait-related predictive information than matched random marker sets. These findings improve understanding of the genetic basis of broiler leg development and provide candidate markers for future validation, which may support future breeding efforts focused on improving broiler leg traits.

Genome-Wide Association Study of Body Measurement Traits at Birth in Cattle

Simple Summary Hexi cattle are an important indigenous beef population in China, known for their strong adaptability to dry environments and excellent growth performance. However, the genetic factors influencing their early growth traits remain largely unclear. In this study, we analyzed the genomes of 264 Hexi calves...

Genome-wide association study of growth, carcass, and meat quality traits in Liangshan Yanying chickens

This study investigated the genetic basis of growth, carcass, and meat quality traits in Yanying chickens, an indigenous breed adapted to high-altitude environments. A total of 19 growth traits and 29 carcass and meat quality traits were measured, and genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed to identify loci...

Genome-Wide Association Study of Body Weight and Body Size Traits in Wenshang Barred Chickens at the Late Rearing Stage

Simple Summary Body weight and body size traits are critical indicators in poultry production, as they directly reflect skeletal development and muscle growth. However, indigenous chicken breeds typically exhibit slow growth during the late rearing period, the phase prior to marketing or the onset of lay, which substan...

Genome-Wide Association Study of Body Conformation and Carcass Composition Traits in Landrace Pigs

Simple Summary Improving pork production efficiency is a primary goal for the agricultural industry. While traits like body size (length and height), backfat thickness (BFT), and lean meat percentage (LMP) directly determine meat yield, their genetic bases remains incompletely understood. This study investigated the ge...

132. Identification of Candidate Genes Associated with Weaning Weight in Simmental Cattle.

Weaning weight is an economically important trait in beef cattle, as it reflects early growth, maternal ability, and calf development. In US Simmental cattle, the open-herdbook system may affect gene enrichment patterns by introducing alleles from other breeds that might alter the genetic architecture of this trait....
