We present JoyAI-Talker, a full-duplex speech dialogue system that delivers robust foundation model capabilities while empowering empathetic interaction and voice agent intelligence. JoyAI-Talker adopts a modular Thinker-Talker architecture and further implements a unified speech-text joint training pipeline to mitigate the common"cognitive degradation"bottleneck, thereby largely preserving the model's core textual reasoning, STEM, and logical capabilities while extending them to speech-based interaction. For expressive speech synthesis, the Talker module employs a text-controllable generation paradigm that enables natural-language instructions to flexibly control vocal attributes and localized paralinguistic events, such as laughter and sighs, supporting more expressive and fine-grained speech responses. To enhance conversational empathy, we introduce the Persona-Adaptive Empathetic Response (PAER) framework. PAER employs a hierarchical cognitive pipeline to extract non-verbal speaker cues, such as gender, age, and emotional state, from raw input audio, incorporate them into the Thinker's CoT reasoning, and generate context-adaptive responses that align semantically appropriate text with fine-grained control over utterance-level expressiveness and localized paralinguistic events, including sighs, speaking rate, and volume. We further integrate Joy-Duplex, a state-driven, plug-and-play full-duplex framework that functions as an efficient gating engine for real-time turn control. Extensive evaluations show that JoyAI-Talker achieves highly competitive performance on foundational T2T and S2T benchmarks. In full-duplex evaluation, the system reaches a high response rate of 0.88 under user interruptions while maintaining an extremely low false-trigger rate under background speech, demonstrating its readiness for fluid and natural speech dialogue.
Conversational Speech Synthesis is a fundamental component of human-computer interaction, aiming to generate contextually appropriate, expressive, and empathetic speech. However, facial expressions encode subtle and rich affective cues that are crucial for empathetic speech interaction, whereas existing approaches often overlook this important modality. In addition, the lack of large-scale natural conversational datasets with both speech and visual modalities also limits the development of visual affect understanding in conversational settings. To address these limitations, we propose FacialTalker, a facial-expression-aware CSS framework built upon a large language model backbone. To efficiently encode facial expressions, we propose AUTokenizer, a single-codebook visual tokenizer that discretizes each frame-level facial expression into a compact token, trained with supervision from combinations of facial Action Units. We further introduce a dual direct preference optimization (DualDPO) strategy, which extends the DPO by jointly imposing preference constraints on both visual and speech token sequences, to enhance the model's understanding of facial expressions and speech semantics in multimodal conversational contexts. Moreover, we construct VSDD-1K, a large-scale multimodal dialogue dataset collected through a fully automated pipeline from real-world Internet conversations, comprising over 1,033 hours of synchronized speaker videos and speech, with more than 85\% of frames containing valid faces. Extensive objective and subjective experiments demonstrate that FacialTalker consistently outperforms strong baselines in facial-expression perception and speech synthesis quality, generating speech that is more natural, expressive, and better aligned with the conversational context. The results also validate the effectiveness of our training strategy and dataset construction pipeline.

The advance of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) has fundamentally reshaped the paradigm of human-computer interaction, especially speech interaction models capable of seamless conversations. Despite remarkable performance as general voice assistants, their performance in specialized domains remains underexplored, particularly in scientific areas. Scientific interactions introduce formidable challenges, involving rare technical terminology, spoken norms of abbreviations, and the natural verbalization of symbolic special expressions. In this paper, we introduce S$^3$-Bench, a systematic evaluation framework covering 10 major disciplines, consisting of a Knowledge set for speech question-answering and a Dialogue set for multi-turn progressive interactions with simulated user agents. By decomposing a complete atomic turn into stages of speech recognition, perception, knowledge utilization with reasoning, and response pronunciation, we systematically characterize the common challenges and performance tradeoffs of existing approaches. Furthermore, experiments on multi-turn interactions reveal persistent limitations in user adaptation and the generation of accurate, comprehensive, and efficient responses.

Conversational Speech Synthesis (CSS) aims to synthesize speech with human-like emotional expression and contextual consistency in user-agent interactions. Existing CSS methods struggle to render authentic human emotions due to limited predefined emotion label spaces (e.g., seven emotion categories), while redundant multimodal tokens in multi-turn dialogue history interfere with context understanding. To address these issues, we propose AuEmoChat, a CSS framework for authentic emotion understanding and rendering. First, we develop AuEmoCodec, which learns a discrete authentic emotion token space from large-scale emotional speech via finite scalar quantization, enabling a more authentic emotion representation than limited basic emotion categories. Furthermore, we propose AuEmoToMe, an authentic-emotion-guided token merging algorithm that merges redundant tokens in multimodal dialogue history while preserving emotion-relevant context. We integrate it into an autoregressive text-speech model to predict the target authentic emotion token and speech tokens. Finally, we propose Authentic Emotion Flow Matching, which renders speech by jointly conditioning on merged dialogue context, target authentic emotion, and acoustic priors. Extensive experiments on the NCSSD-EmCap dataset demonstrate that AuEmoChat outperforms state-of-the-art CSS baselines and generates more expressive and authentic emotional speech. The code and speech demos will be available at: https://github.com/AI-S2-Lab/AuEmoChat.

Omni-modal dialogue models can understand multimodal inputs and synthesize spoken replies, but a spoken answer still leaves the agent visually absent. We introduce \textbf{Ex-Omni-2D}, a framework that answers a multimodal query with coordinated text, personalized speech, and reference-conditioned video. The dialogue model first writes a structured \textit{Visual Thought Plan} (VTP) for scene, emotion, and motion, then generates the response text and multi-codebook speech units. These speech units are decoded into audio and aligned with video frames, giving the speech and avatar modules a common timing signal while allowing them to learn from different data sources. The video module is trained as a full-sequence Teacher conditioned on reference appearance, VTP semantics, and frame-aligned speech units. We further explore to distill it into a few-step block-causal \emph{Streaming Student}; its Prefix Streaming mechanism carries the previous clean latent into the next chunk and is analyzed as a partial mitigation for late-chunk subject drift. At $400\times720$/$720\times400$, the four-step four-GPU Student provides incremental output with lower startup latency than the full-sequence Teacher.

Empathetic social robots should respond not only to what users say, but also to how their emotions dynamically evolve during interaction. However, existing empathetic dialogue systems are often text-centered and primarily model empathy as a one-way mapping from the user's emotion to the system response, limiting their ability to capture embodied speaker--listener affective exchange. We present AffectLoop, a multimodal speaker-listener emotion-dynamics-aware spoken dialogue system implemented on the Misty II robot. The system tracks the speaker's verbal and facial affective dynamics, estimates the robot listener's own verbal and behavioral affective state, and conditions LLM-based response generation on both affective streams. The robot then generates a short spoken empathetic response together with emotionally congruent embodied behavior, forming a closed speaker--listener affective loop. We evaluate the system in a pilot within-subject study with five participants, comparing it with an otherwise identical utterance-conditioned baseline that omits the speaker- and listener-affective-state inputs. The proposed system received higher overall impression ratings, especially for empathetic response and user satisfaction. Post-hoc log analysis further showed higher speaker-listener affective alignment and stronger valence-based distress recovery. These preliminary results suggest that explicitly modeling both speaker emotional dynamics and listener affective state can improve embodied empathetic interaction.

Human-computer interaction has progressed significantly in recent years, yet existing digital assistants continue to suffer from limitations in emotional engagement, personalisation, and expressive communication. Most current AI systems operate primarily through text or voice, lacking a visual presence that allows users to form meaningful connections with technology. To address this gap, our paper introduces JARWIN (Just A Real-World Intelligent Network). This next-generation AI companion integrates a large language model, speech processing, and real-time 3D avatar animation to create a more natural, interactive, and intelligent user experience. The architecture features multiple operational tiers, including speech-to-text transcription, sentiment-aware conversational modelling, text-to-speech synthesis, and avatar-based emotional expression. Linear conversational modelling serves as the initial baseline for contextual understanding, while more advanced transformer-based models are employed to handle nuanced dialogue, sentiment variations, and continuous memory retention. Additionally, emotion recognition mechanisms dynamically map conversational tone to facial expressions and gestures, enabling human-like responsiveness. The result is a system capable not only of executing functional tasks, such as opening applications and retrieving information, but also of maintaining adaptive, emotionally aware dialogue. By bridging cognitive intelligence with visual embodiment, this paper demonstrates a scalable, innovative approach to immersive digital companionship, offering new opportunities for personalised assistance, interactive learning, mental wellness support, and human-AI relational computing.
