Abstract
Communication development in individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions requires interdisciplinary approaches to better understand its complexity. This study aimed to analyze scientific evidence on language development in individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, considering contributions from cognitive neuroscience and linguistics. An integrative literature review was conducted using the ERIC, SciELO, Latindex, DOAJ, and LIVRE databases, including publications from 2020 to 2026. A total of 285 records were identified, and 13 studies met the eligibility criteria for the final analysis. The findings indicate substantial individual variability in language development, influenced by neurobiological, cognitive, and environmental factors, with pragmatic communication skills being the most affected. Early and individualized interventions were consistently associated with improved functional communication outcomes. The findings reinforce the need for integrated explanatory models capable of supporting evidence-based clinical and educational practices
This study examines the neurological, cognitive and linguistic dimensions that explain communication disorders in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), emphasising that their linguistic deficits are not so much due to structural grammatical deficiencies as they are to a contextual-pragmatic gap that hinders the functional use of language in social interaction. The article reviews the neurobiological foundations of the disorder, focusing on the role of the mirror neuron system (MNS) in explaining deficits in imitation and theory of mind, and drawing on explanatory cognitive models such as central coherence impairment and in executive functions. The article also details receptive and expressive language features; it refutes the common perception that expressive language is superior to receptive language, demonstrating the association of language disparities with non-verbal cognitive abilities, neural tonality processing and event-related potentials (ERPs). The study concludes that it is important to shift from formalistic approaches to early pragmatic and functional interventions, and to integrate behavioural assessment tools (such as the VB-MAPP) to enhance communicative competence and self-awareness in natural environments.

The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder around the world, along with the significant economic and other costs at the individual, family and community levels, necessitate greater focus on approaches that could help prevent the development or exacerbation of autism-related behaviour. There is a considerable amount of evidence-based practices aimed at addressing the impairments associated with autism and related impairments. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the evidence-based, non-pharmacological treatments available in the current English-language literature that target those impairments. This is a narrative review of foreign experimental studies published in peer-reviewed academic journals over the last 20 years. The paper concludes with the authors’ considerations for practice and future research. Future research examining the effectiveness of evidence-based techniques for more complex social communication skills beyond asking, initiating, responding, and maintaining social interaction seem warranted

Language forms the foundation of social interactions, allowing us to connect with family and peers. Through speech, we express our thoughts and emotions to others. Experiencing challenges in speech and language functions during development can therefore significantly affect social relationships, cognitive and affective development. In child and adolescence psychiatry, clinicians have observed that speech and language abilities may be altered in various mental (behavioral/developmental) disorders (psychiatric disorders). This review provides an overview of systematic and original investigations exploring how speech and language are affected in child and adolescent psychiatric conditions, including autism spectrum, schizophrenia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and depression. We emphasize research that utilized neuroimaging techniques (i.e., EEG, MRI, fNIRS) to investigate the neurobiological basis for alterations in speech or language in child and adolescence psychiatry. The findings indicate that each reviewed syndrome shows evidence of altered speech or language functions, along with corresponding neurobiological changes. Most available studies focus on autism spectrum, while research concerning schizophrenia and depression generally involved adults rather than children or adolescents. This highlights a considerable research gap in understanding (the neurobiological cause of) speech and language alterations in developing populations with psychiatric conditions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological state that is marked by difficulties skills and interactions, alongside iterative behaviours and limiting interests. ASD affects around one in the US; one out of every 54 children have a diagnosis. usually coming in early infancy following full assessments by multidisciplinary teams. ASD symptoms vary greatly and are typically shown in two areas: social communication problems and repetitive behaviour. While the actual origins of ASD are unknown, evidence indicates a mix of genetic predispositions and environmental variables. Early intervention with occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and behavioural therapies and support for education is essential for better outcomes. Recent advancements in genetic research, neuroimaging and the growth of innovative ways to treat show promise for improving the understanding and management of ASD. This review seeks to present a complete picture of ASD, including its symptoms, causes and current and developing therapy. It also stresses the need for continued research and raising awareness to help those affected and their families.
