Optical tracking of mixed ionic-electronic transport in conjugated polymers

Conducting polymers and applications

Abstract

While OMIECs are widely used for bioelectronics, the dynamic relationship between ionic and electronic transport in these materials is generally poorly understood, hindering the rational design of new materials. To investigate mixed charge transport in detail, we developed an optical method to monitor electrochemical (de)doping of OMIECs in operando. We leverage the results to inform a quasi-field drift-diffusion model, which captures experimentally measured ion transport across a range of potentials. We find that the chemical potential of electronic carriers is a major driving force for mixed-charge transport. The results also reveal that electrochemical doping speeds can be limited by poor electronic transport at low doping levels. The timescale of electronically-limited doping depends on the degree of microstructural heterogeneity, enabling the design of materials with improved performance.
