Abstract
Introduction: This article presents a bibliometric review of Lean Thinking, with an emphasis on
maturity models. Objective: The objective is to map scientific production and identify trends and areas of application in the literature. Methodology: Based on 106 peer-reviewed publications indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases between 2002 and June 2026, the study followed the PRISMA
2020 guidelines, combining descriptive analysis using R-bibliometrix, scientific mapping with
VOSviewer software, and content analysis of the most cited documents. Results: The results reveal an
actively expanding field, with an annual growth rate of 7.75% and approximately 78% of the scientific production concentrated after 2018. The co-occurrence analysis identified six thematic clusters, while the co-citation analysis revealed four clusters. Brazil leads scientific production, accounting for 16.4% of the documents, followed by the United Kingdom and Australia. Based on the content analysis of the 15 most cited documents, the study proposes a classification of Lean maturity models into six categories: Lean Manufacturing, Lean Six Sigma, Lean Healthcare, Lean Construction, Lean Industry 4.0, and Lean Green. Conclusion: The findings reinforce the consolidation of maturity models as strategic tools for assessing and guiding the evolution of Lean within organizations, highlighting the need for empirical validations that connect theory and practice and to promote continuous improvement and quality management in organizations.
A systematic literature review guided initially by a scientometric analysis and then by the Tree of Science approach, classifying seminal works (roots), established studies (trunk), and emerging research (leaves) reflects a growing trend in total scientific production.
