Abstract

This qualitative study explored the dynamics of principal leadership and teacher motivation within Eswatini’s high school education system, employing transformational leader-ship theory as a guiding framework. We conducted this study across eight high schools, collecting data through eight individual interviews and two focus group discussions involving eight randomly selected principals. Using Tesch’s analysis method, the study identified key themes that articulate how the principals’ leadership practices impact teacher motivation. The findings denoted that the effective management of school resources, the promotion of professional development, the provision of supportive environments, and the establishment of clear communication channels are pivotal in enhancing teacher morale. Conversely, factors such as excessive workload, insufficient instructional materials, and recognition deficits impede motivation. The main research objective was to illuminate the critical role of principal leadership in fostering teacher motivation, ultimately linking these dynamics to improved educational outcomes. The study concluded that transformational leadership attributes, particularly in supporting teachers through empowerment, professional development, and fostering collegial relationships, are essential to cultivating a motivated teaching workforce in Eswatini’s high schools.
