Abstract
----- The share underweight (BMI below 18.5) in the National Health and Nutrition Survey was lined up by sex and 6 age groups at ages 20+, joining the trend table for 2004–2017 with the tables of BMI status for 2017–2023 (18 years). Women aged 20–29 were at 22.68% in the first 5 years (2004–2008) and 21.14% in the last 5 rounds (2017–2023), and the 18-year slope is only 1.23 times its standard error. The 5 rounds of 2017–2023 seem to swing between 19.1% and 24.4%, but only 119–177 people were counted, the standard error expected from these numbers is 3.06–3.73 points, and the sum of squared deviations ÷ squared standard errors is 1.32 (4 degrees of freedom): the swings lie within the smallness of the numbers. What clearly rose was ages 50–59 (5.44% → 10.30%, 1.89 times) and 60–69 (1.61 times), and 0.665–0.687 of that rise had occurred by 2011–2015. Narrowing the window to 2013–2023, the slopes are smaller than twice their standard errors, not contradicting the summary's "no significant change for women." What separates them is whether the share moved or swung because few people were counted. This paper is a structural interpretation of the shape of numbers in public aggregate data; it is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a treatment recommendation. The author is not a physician. Decisions about individual health should be discussed with a physician or a medical institution. This is a preprint that has not been peer reviewed. No new mathematical theorem and no new law are claimed. It does not judge body shapes, and says neither that being underweight is good nor that it is bad. It does not go into why the shares moved. The standard error is a guide assuming simple sampling. Prefectures are not compared. Source: processed from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (e-Stat) and the ministry's summary of results. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations. Assistance from an AI (a large language model) was used for structuring, English translation, and checking the algebra. Any remaining errors or misinterpretations are solely the author's.
