Abstract

----- For 2013 and 2023 of the National Health and Nutrition Survey, the differences in the means at ages 20+ (by sex) of steps, BMI, salt, potassium, and energy were split into the difference in age-specific values and the difference in the age composition of the people who answered the survey (Kitagawa's method, 6 age groups). The share of respondents aged 70+ grew in every table (in the steps table, men 0.262 → 0.296). That same aging accounted for 0.151 (men) and 0.140 (women) of the fall in steps, deepening it; covered 0.077 of the 0.103 rise in women's BMI; was nearly 0 for men's salt; and offset 0.375 and 0.682 of the age-specific fall in potassium. The direction of the age-composition part agrees in all 10 pairs with whether 70+ ÷ 20–29 exceeds 1. The age-specific part of women's BMI, +0.026, is smaller than the ±0.055 the table's rounding alone can move it. What separates them is whether the age-specific values moved or the age line-up of respondents moved. This paper is a structural interpretation of the shape of numbers in public aggregate data; it is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a treatment recommendation. The author is not a physician. Decisions about individual health should be discussed with a physician or a medical institution. This is a preprint that has not been peer reviewed. No new mathematical theorem and no new law are claimed. The age composition here is that of respondents, not of the national population. It does not go into why the age-specific values moved. It does not replace the ministry's test on age-adjusted values. Prefectures are not compared. Source: processed from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (e-Stat) and the ministry's summary of results. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations. Assistance from an AI (a large language model) was used for structuring, English translation, and checking the algebra. Any remaining errors or misinterpretations are solely the author's. Feedback and corrections are sincerely appreciated.
