Abstract

----- For 10 rounds of the National Health and Nutrition Survey (2013–2019 and 2022–2024), the mean, median, and standard deviation of salt equivalent intake at ages 20 and over were lined up from Table 1-2 (men) and Table 1-3 (women) of each year. Mean − median stays within 0.39–0.57 g for men and 0.31–0.47 g for women, and the change from 2013 to 2023 is the same for men in the mean (−0.48) and the median (−0.48) (the ministry reports, using age-adjusted values, no significant increase or decrease over the 10 years). Yet only in the 2024 table, which carries the note "national correction values," is the standard deviation of salt small: 3.00 for men and 2.62 for women, 0.732 and 0.722 times the previous year. Across the 35 nutrients of the same table the median ratio of the standard deviation is 0.748 (men), against 0.909 in the other national-correction year 2016 and 0.999 in the control 2019→2022, while the ratio of the mean is 0.984–1.002 in every pair. The numbers match the square root 0.7483 of the weight-sum ratio 0.5599, but the formula is not given in the summary, and this is not treated as a proof of the reason. What separates them is whether what moved was on the side of people or on the side of how the table is made. This paper is a structural interpretation of the shape of numbers in public aggregate data; it is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a treatment recommendation. The author is not a physician. Decisions about individual health should be discussed with a physician or a medical institution. This is a preprint that has not been peer reviewed. No new mathematical theorem and no new law are claimed. It does not say that salt intake has fallen. It does not go into salt targets or effects on health. The version of the food composition table could be confirmed only for 2018 and 2019. Prefectures are not compared. Source: processed from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (e-Stat) and the ministry's reports and summaries. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations. Assistance from an AI (a large language model) was used for structuring, English translation, and checking the algebra. Any remaining errors or misinterpretations are solely the author's. Feedback and corrections are sincerely appreciated.
