It is demonstrated that most species-specific TRGs are genuine de novo gene births whereas most of the TRGs that are conserved across the Saccharomyces genus derive from highly diverged ancestral genes whose homology is no longer detectable using common methods.
A broad computational investigation of genetic and protein novelty throughout the entire subphylum of Saccharomycotina yeasts shows that “invention” of new folds occurs more frequently through de novo emergence, and illustrates cases of evolutionary “re-invention” of existing protein folds from noncoding sequences.

Where recombination takes place is crucial as it determines the position of genetic reshuffling, which facilitates species evolution and adaptation. In many vertebrates, PRDM9 determines the location of double-strand breaks that initiates meiotic recombination. However, this only applies for Prdm9 orthologs that posses...

In contrast to the extensively studied translocation of large sections of DNA between chromosomes, this paper investigates the translocation of individual genes onto different chromosomes during metazoan evolution. We begin by extending the analysis of deeply conserved synteny of metazoan chromosomes reported by Simako...

Through multiplex, single-cell enhancer assays, HAQERs are identified as active enhancers in the developing brain and cardiomyocytes, and their potential contributions to human-specific gene regulation across multiple tissues are highlighted.

This work proposes a 'collective maintenance' model in which motif vocabularies defining cell type families are evolutionarily stable, while recombination of these motifs generates cell type-specific regulatory programmes.

Tandemly repeated sequences are noncoding, highly variable, yet integral components of eukaryotic genomes. Empirical research has so far largely focused on a few well-characterized, functional tandem repeats (TRs) or documented the broad diversity and rapid evolution of these repeats without explicitly testing the forc...
