One Third of the Geodetic Precession Survives When Gravity Is Switched Off ── Turning the spatial-curvature parameter moves only one of the two ── the separator is whether one switches off gravity or switches off spatial curvature ── [Paper 1063]
Abstract
One word, precession, points at two different effects. One comes from fast motion itself, the other from the spacetime around a heavy body. Earlier papers treated the two separately, and none placed them in a single frame for comparison. No new theorem or law is claimed. Scope of this paper (scope note): No new theorem or law is claimed──Thomas precession, geodetic precession, parallel transport of a spin along a circular orbit, and the parametrised post-Newtonian metric are all standard. Why the spatial-curvature part counts twice is not answered──what is written is only what each of the two effects responds to and what it does not. It is not re-read through hyperbolic area──reading the precession of fast motion as the area of a curved surface has already been written. This paper takes another route and composes Lorentz transformations to extract the rotation. No post-Newtonian framework is built──the parameter that scales spatial curvature is used only as a standard tool. Experimental values are not cited──how far orbiting gyroscopes have confirmed this precession is not treated, because the sources have not been checked. Numerical integration is not called proof──what can be said is agreement with an independently stated formula to a definite number of digits. The two are not called one root──all they share is that both move with speed, and no mechanism by which moving one moves the other has been measured. Relation to earlier papers: Paper 60 read the precession of fast motion as an area in curved velocity space and judged which 4π appears there──this paper does not repeat that route, and obtains the same angle from the composition of transformations instead. Paper 63 paired the curvature of velocity space with that of spacetime──this paper separates that pair, on one orbit, into two precessions. Paper 66 placed velocity-space curvature beside gravitational redshift──what is moved here is not a redshift but the direction of a gyroscope. Paper 76 put velocity-space curvature and the spacetime metric in one frame on phase space──within that frame, this paper shows in numbers that the two effects move with different handles. Paper 1027 showed that the spatial curvature of a rotating disk and the curvature of velocity space differ in their argument──the same kind of separation is applied here to two precessions. Paper 300 showed that whether two things share a root is decidable──following that discipline, only the one shared point is written and the two are not called one root. What is added: producing the two precessions on one orbit by separate routes, measuring that the coefficient moves linearly with the spatial-curvature parameter, confirming that the intercept is the precession of fast motion itself, and showing in numbers that the whole is three times it. First, each was produced by a separate route──the former by composing Lorentz transformations and extracting only the rotation, the latter by parallel-transporting a spin around a circular orbit. Against independent formulas the relative differences are at most 4.716×10⁻⁷ and 1.498×10⁻⁹. Second, and this is the core. The latter is not a single effect──turning the spatial-curvature parameter from 0 to 1 moves the coefficient linearly, with slope 6.276908365 and intercept 3.145915309. Third, that intercept is the former itself──measuring the former at the same orbital speed gives 3.142771190, differing from the intercept by only 0.003144119. Fourth, so the whole is three times the former──dividing the general-relativistic value by the former gives 2.998875002. Fifth, the separator is which handle is turned──switching off gravity leaves the former standing (at speed 0.6 it is 1.570796290459 radians), while turning the spatial-curvature parameter moves only the latter, by 6.276908595, against 0.000×10⁰ for the former. Stated plainly──why the spatial-curvature part counts twice is not answered. Numerical integration reaches agreement with an independent formula, not proof. Closing: one third of the geodetic precession survives when gravity is switched off. The two were produced by separate routes──composition of transformations and integration of parallel transport, agreeing with independent formulas to at most 4.716×10⁻⁷ and 1.498×10⁻⁹. The precession from spacetime is not a single effect──turning the spatial-curvature parameter moves the coefficient linearly, with slope 6.276908365, intercept 3.145915309 and residuals at most 7.843×10⁻⁴. The intercept is the precession of fast motion itself──measured at the same orbital speed 0.022360680 the coefficient is 3.142771190, differing by only 0.003144119. So the whole is three times it──dividing 9.424777961 by 3.142771190 gives 2.998875002. They look alike because both move with speed──on a circular orbit the square of the speed equals the ratio of mass to radius, so on one orbit the two come out equally small. Stated plainly──why the spatial-curvature part counts twice is not answered. Numerical integration reaches agreement with an independent formula, not proof, and no experimental value is cited. The separator──whether one switches off gravity or switches off spatial curvature. The first leaves only the precession of fast motion; the second moves only the precession from spacetime.
