Sustaining teachers’ epistemic agency in AI-supported instructional design: An exploratory design-based study of a conversational-function approach

Sep 2026 · Teaching and Teacher Education · Vol 183, pp. 105826 · 46 references

Abstract

The increasing use of generative AI in instructional design raises concerns about cognitive outsourcing, as lesson planning may become overly shaped by algorithmic outputs. Because learning is situated and personalized, sustaining teachers' epistemic agency—responsibility for instructional decisions—is essential for student-centered planning. This exploratory study uses a design-based research approach to examine how a conversational-function framework can support teachers' epistemic agency in AI-assisted instructional design (AIID). Nineteen in-service teachers participated in two iterative intervention cycles in which structured conversational functions scaffolded teacher-AI interaction. Teachers' AIID scores showed substantial within-context improvement across the two cycles, accompanied by changes in score variability. These outcome patterns, together with network and sequential analyses of teacher-AI dialogues, suggest that conversational functions may support more coherent teacher-AI interaction patterns that sustain teachers’ epistemic responsibility for instructional decisions.
