Running One Rule on Four Clocks: What Agrees and What Does Not: The Interval Between Crossings Agrees to 1.0833, While the Move per Bar Differs by 3.0434 and the Session Spread by 3.2248 [F019]
Abstract
----- There are four ways of cutting bars: time, event count, displacement and path length. From one market they produce four different sequences. Two predictions were written before measuring. First: the interval between moving-average crossings, counted in bars, is set by the two periods, so the number of bars should agree even when the clock changes. Second: the size of the move per bar is the definition of the cut itself, so it should not agree. From five-minute bars for four series (USDJPY, EURUSD, GBPUSD, XAUUSD) from 2022 to 2024, four clocks were built. The scales for the latter three were chosen so that the median time per bar comes closest to 60 minutes — never by results, since choosing by results would be the act of picking the best of four. The departure from 60 minutes is 5.0000 minutes at the median and at the maximum, which is as close as five-minute building blocks allow. Matching medians does not match distributions: cutting by displacement leaves half as many bars (8,228 to 9,741). The core of the paper is this. Running the same moving-average crossover (5 and 20) on all four puts the interval between crossings between 12.0000 and 14.0000 bars in all 16 cells, a largest-to-smallest ratio of 1.1667 and a median by instrument of 1.0833. The medians by clock are 13.0000 for the clock, 13.0000 for the event count, 13.0000 for displacement and 12.5000 for path length: different cuts and different instruments, the same number of bars. What sets the interval is the two periods of the moving averages, neither the market nor the cut. So "on this bar type the crossover captures waves of about 13 bars" is a restatement of the periods one chose, and that the number does not change when the bar type changes is the evidence. The count agrees while the time does not (60.0000 minutes on the clock, 65.0000 on displacement). Across the same four, other quantities do not agree. The largest-to-smallest ratio is 3.0434 for the median move per bar, 3.3746 for its coefficient of variation and 3.2248 for the session spread. The session spread is 3.5561 for the clock, 1.6429 for the event count, 1.0837 for displacement and 2.0177 for path length, so cutting by displacement all but removes it. That is to be expected: cutting by displacement means one bar per fixed distance travelled, so the move per bar is nearly constant by definition, and "cutting by displacement makes the move uniform" must not be written up as a benefit — it is a restatement of the definition, not a measurement. As for directional information, the daily-clustered t reaches 2 in absolute value in 0 of 16 cells on all four clocks (chance gives about 0.7), with a median D of −0.0150 pips against a median spread of 0.8000 pips. The median D by clock scatters from +1.2306 to −1.4436, a ratio of 7.7727, but no t reaches 2, so that scatter is noise: ratios between small numbers come out large and must not be read alone. Scope of this paper: no new mathematical theorem and no new law is claimed; the four ways of cutting and the moving-average crossover are known. No real course, author, or vendor is the subject here, and none is named. Trading performance, including commissions, fills and money management, is not measured. The chief limitation is that all four clocks are assembled from five-minute bars, so every boundary falls on a five-minute mark. Only one rule is used. Taking "agrees" to mean a ratio below 1.5 is the paper's convention rather than a product of the measurement, though the gap between 1.0833 and 3.0434 is wide enough that any threshold from 1.5 to 2.5 gives the same answer. The drift is not separated. The measurement is intraday and covers four instruments over three years, and does not contradict results documented at longer holding periods, such as monthly time-series momentum.
