Quantum Gates and Circuits: Unitary Transformations, Reversible Logic, and Quantum Circuit Compilation

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

This comprehensive university-preparatory open module investigates the algebraic foundations, unitary transformation matrices, and compilation architectures of quantum logic gates and circuits within the Prep4Uni open STEM curriculum. The module bridges abstract linear algebra in complex Hilbert spaces with physical hardware implementations and quantum algorithm design. Core Thematic and Pedagogical Foundations: Systems-Level IDEF0 Functional Architecture: Maps quantum gates and circuits education across core mathematical inputs, governing controls (unitary evolution U-dagger U = I, norm conservation, fault-tolerant error thresholds), execution mechanisms (interactive circuit simulators, pulse-level microwave schedulers, cryo-CMOS controllers), and verified technical outputs. Single-Qubit Unitary Operators: Mathematical formalisms and matrix representations for the Pauli basis (X, Y, Z), Hadamard superposition generator (H), phase gates (S, T), and arbitrary Bloch sphere rotation operators (Rx, Ry, Rz). Multi-Qubit Entangling Logic: Detailed operational analysis of the Controlled-NOT (CNOT), Toffoli (CCNOT), and SWAP gates acting on composite Hilbert spaces. Step-by-step mathematical derivation of the canonical two-qubit Bell state generator circuit (mapping separable ground states |00> into maximally entangled Bell states). Universal Gate Libraries and Algorithm Architecture: Examination of universal gate sets under the Solovay-Kitaev theorem (Clifford + T), structural decomposition of Grover's search algorithm (superposition initialization, oracle phase-flip, and diffusion amplitude amplification), and Shor's algorithm modular exponentiation circuits. Physical Hardware Constraints and Transpilation: Analysis of limited qubit connectivity, planar coupling graphs, SWAP routing network overhead, and the impact of circuit depth on coherence budgets (T1, T2) across superconducting and trapped-ion hardware. Interactive Circuit Depth and Fidelity Simulator: Embedded numerical model calculating cumulative circuit fidelity degradation across sequential gate depth layers as a function of single-qubit fidelity, two-qubit CNOT fidelity, and entangling gate ratio. Quantitative Circuit Problem Suite: Worked step-by-step mathematical problem sets covering cumulative five-gate fidelity chains, three-qubit Hadamard register state space sizing, Pauli-X followed by T-phase amplitude rotations, ten-gate sequential error accumulation, Euler phase shift decompositions, simulator state evaluation rates, fault-tolerant error reduction factors, and coherence lifetime gate capacities.
