Error Progression in the Developing Fetus: A Mathematical Review

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

The developing fetus conducts billions of molecular processes, including cell division, gene regulation, protein signaling, and tissue remodeling—with remarkable precision. Errors in these systems could lead to implications that range from small changes in genes to major birth defects. This study examinesthe use of mathematical methods to explain, predict, and improve the knowledge of error development during fetal growth. We use mutation models, gene network analysis, reaction-diffusion equations, and theories of epigenetic programming to follow the beginning, growth, and fixing of biological errors. Clinical data is linked constantly, using congenital heart disease, the most common structural birth abnormality, as a practical example of how genetic defects manifest. Mathematical modelling appears as an asset with benefits for early diagnosis, treatment planning, and prevention.
