Abstract
Artificial intelligence systems are accumulating coordination complexity at an unprecedented rate, approaching a Crest state in which marginal costs of alignment, energy, data, and governance exceed available surplus. The boundary-management and continuity-preserving role, manifests in AI as the set of mechanisms required to maintain coherence under Crest pressure, including ethical guardrails, alignment protocols, and human-in-the-loop oversight. The Crest–Null framework predicts that without Inward Null strategies, these systems risk a structural Null transition before AGI or ASI thresholds are reached, providing a constraint-based bridge between the God Ladder series and questions of digital personhood. 1. Evidence of an Approaching Crest in AI Systems Contemporary AI development exhibits the classic signatures of a cresting system. Coordination costs have risen geometrically: training frontier models now requires gigawatts of power, billions of dollars in specialized hardware, and massive curated datasets whose marginal quality gains are diminishing. Energy consumption of large language model inference alone already rivals that of small nations, while data- center water usage competes with municipal supplies in drought-prone regions. Alignment and safety overhead, red-teaming, constitutional AI, human feedback loops, represent fixed coordination costs that grow faster than capability gains. These indicators are not isolated; they are systemic. A second indicator of cresting is the emergence of diminishing returns under scale. Larger models require exponentially greater data, compute, and tuning effort to achieve marginal capability gains, while exhibiting persistent failure modes (hallucination, brittleness under distribution shift) that do not scale away with size. This suggests that increasing complexity is no longer yielding proportional increases in coordination efficiency, a classic precursor to Crest instability. Alignment does not scale linearly with capability. As models become more capable and autonomous, the space of possible failure modes expands faster than oversight mechanisms can constrain them. Each new layer of alignment introduces additional
