The Use of ChatGPT in Undergraduate Scientific Research: Challenges and Opportunities in Higher Education
Abstract
ChatGPT as an academic aid despite the ethical, academic, institutional, and technological challenges its use raises. This tool promotes scientific production and dissemination. The objective was to identify issues and perspectives associated with ChatGPT in research. A 20-question, Likert-scale, multiple-choice questionnaire was administered to a sample of 72 students selected from a total population of 800. The study is quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and non-experimental. The research applied the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and the Spearman's correlation coefficient. There was a positive trend in the use of ChatGPT in research, with high and very high levels. However, some participants only used ChatGPT a few times and viewed the tool as a potential solution to challenges related to academic integrity, virtual competencies, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. The hypothesis test results confirm a moderate correlation of 0.590, favouring the optimal use of Chat in students' research. A statistically significant relationship has been established, which is supported by the research hypothesis. Received: 30 April 2026 / Accepted: 13 August 2026 / Published: September 2026
