Together with the silver-schedule upper bound and the anytime upper bound, the results determine the optimal polynomial convergence exponents in both settings.
Abstract
We study how far gradient descent (GD) can be accelerated by predetermined stepsizes in smooth convex optimization. Writing $p_{\mathrm{sil}}=\log_2(1+\sqrt{2})$, we prove an $\Omega\left(n^{-p_{\mathrm{sil}}-O(\sqrt{\log\log n/\log n})}\right)$ non-anytime lower bound. In the anytime setting, every infinite schedule has infinitely many horizons with error $\Omega\left(n^{-\frac{2p_{\mathrm{sil}}}{1+p_{\mathrm{sil}}}-O(\sqrt{\log\log n/\log n})}\right)$. Together with the silver-schedule upper bound [Altschuler and Parrilo, 2025] and the anytime upper bound [Zhang et al., 2025], our results determine the optimal polynomial convergence exponents in both settings.
We study gradient descent with predetermined nonnegative stepsizes on smooth strongly convex functions. Let $p_{\mathrm{sil}}=\log_2(1+\sqrt2)$ and $\kappa$ be the condition number. We prove the iteration lower bound $\Omega\left(\kappa^{\frac{1}{p_{\mathrm{sil}}}-o(1)}\log\frac1\delta\right)$ for both relative squared...
We study the time-uniform convergence of the raw iterate of standard stochastic gradient descent (SGD) for unconstrained smooth convex objectives. We prove that, under standard noise assumptions, the time-uniform convergence rate gets arbitrarily close to $\sqrt{\log n / n}$ but never reaches it. More specifically, we...
The anytime lower bound shows that the rate of non-anytime silver schedules (Altschuler and Parrilo, 2025; Grimmer et al., 2025) is unattainable in the anytime setting, and establishes a strict separation between the two settings.
Let $A\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times n}$ have columns of Euclidean norm at most one. We prove that $\operatorname{disc}(A)\le2395\left(1+\log_+\frac n9\right)^{1/4}+2\sqrt2$. Here $\log_+t=\max\{0,\log t\}$. Building on Bansal and Jiang's affine spectral independence framework, we remove the $(\log\log n)^{7/4}$ factor from th...
Let $\pi(\mathrm{d} x)\propto e^{-U(x)}\, \mathrm{d} x$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $U$ is continuously differentiable and $m$-strongly convex with a globally $L$-Lipschitz gradient, $0<m\leq L<\infty$, and $\kappa=L/m$. Fixed-step Metropolis-adjusted Langevin algorithm (MALA) has known warm-start mixing-time upper bounds...
It is proved that every deterministic first-order method requires $\Omega(\ell\Delta\kappa/\epsilon^2)$ oracle queries in the worst case to find $x$ satisfying $\Phi(0)-\inf_x\Phi(x)$ and that the linear dependence on $\kappa$ is unavoidable for deterministic first-order methods.
