Abstract

The translation of idioms is a highly important, subtle, and challenging area of translation studies. Idioms are expressions whose meanings cannot be understood directly from the individual words that compose them. They are not merely linguistic units but also carriers of cultural experience, social tradition, worldview, and emotional expression. Therefore, when an idiom is translated into another language, the translator faces not only the problem of replacing words, but also the challenge of preserving meaning, emotion, context, and cultural references. In many cases, a literal translation of an idiom distorts the original meaning, creates confusion in the text, or removes the naturalness of the expression. This research paper analyzes the major problems involved in idiom translation. It particularly examines how cultural differences, the lack of equivalent expressions, context dependence, and stylistic effect make the translation process complex. The study also considers the usefulness of different translation strategies such as literal translation, meaning-based translation, the use of equivalent idioms, and explanatory translation. Through these strategies, the paper attempts to show how the intended meaning of the original text can be presented more effectively and naturally in the target language. In addition, the paper highlights the future possibilities of idiom translation. The growing importance of modern translation studies, comparative linguistics, digital corpora, and cultural translation has made this field even broader. From this perspective, translating idioms is not merely a technical process, but a creative process of building a bridge between languages and cultures.
