Abstract

: The transition to higher education represents a critical period marked by academic, social, and organizational challenges, particularly in programs with high technical demands such as Civil Engineering. In this context, institutional welcoming strategies have been adopted to support first-year students’ adaptation and integration into the academic environment. This study aims to describe and analyze the planning, organization, and implementation of an institutional student welcoming strategy based on peer mentoring, developed in a Civil Engineering program at a private higher education institution in the Midwest region of Brazil. The study is characterized as a descriptive and analytical experience report grounded in action research principles. The intervention involved approximately 70 students and was structured into complementary stages, including reception and socialization, pedagogical alignment, academic organization, and peer mentoring. The results indicate that the structured organization of the strategy contributed to the implementation of the activity and to the initial academic integration of students, facilitating their understanding of the course dynamics and the establishment of academic relationships. It is concluded that structured and institutionalized welcoming strategies have the potential to support student adaptation processes in higher education.
