Prevalence of Cancer in the Middle Region of Libya According to the National Cancer Institute of Misurata In 2022

Abstract

This study was conducted on data registered at the National Cancer Institute of Misurata in the year 2022. This study aimed to determine the most registered tumors and the most registered age groups, as well as the cities from which the cases were received. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program, version 22. A total of 786 confirmed cases during the year 2022 were included in the analysis. The results of the statistical analysis revealed that the 51–60 age group exhibited the highest cancer frequency, accounting for 22.9%, whereas the 11–20 age group registered the lowest proportion, at just 1.9%. In terms of cities, the highest proportion of cases was in the city of Misurata, at a rate of 40.7%, where the number of cases reached 320, and the lowest proportion of cases was in the city of Misallata, where the number of cases reached 42. In terms of type, the highest frequency was observed for breast cancer, representing 23.3% (183), while the lowest frequency was noted for esophageal cancer, comprising merely 0.3%, reaching two. In terms of gender, the highest prevalence rate was for females, at a rate of 54.3%, where the number of cases reached 427 cases, and the lowest prevalence rate was for males, at a rate of 45.7%, where the number of cases reached 359 cases. According to the results obtained, it is recommended to hold a scientific seminar for community education about the symptoms of cancer and the importance of early diagnosis through the implementation of screening programs for cancer.

Retrospective analysis of tuberculosis incidence in children and adolescents of Poltava region in 2019–2023

Purpose. The aim of the study was to assess the incidence of tuberculosis among children and adolescents in Ukraine and Poltava region in 2019–2023. Materials and methods. Methods: a systematic approach and analysis, a bibliosemantic method, a medical-statistical method. Materials: analytical and statistical reference books “Tuberculosis in Ukraine” for 2019–2023 from the State Institution “Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine”. Results. In Poltava region, the growth rate of the indicator in all age groups is positive, the incidence is at an average level compared to other regions, but incidence is increasing, the largest increase was observed in the age group 15–17 years, this figure in 2023 was twice as high as the national one. The prevalence of all active forms of tuberculosis among different age groups decreased in all regions and in Ukraine, the rate in Poltava region is at an average level compared to others, but exceeded the national rate for all years of the study period. Among children the rate in the 0–14 age group for all years of the study period was significantly lower than the corresponding indicator in Ukraine, in the 0–17 age group it was close to the national one, with an excess in 2022. Conclusions. The analysis of the incidence of tuberculosis among children and adolescents we determined that in Poltava region the incidence of tuberculosis is increasing, the largest increase was observed in the age group of 15–17 years, and in the same age group there was a significant exceeding the national prevalence of active forms of tuberculosis. In addition, the prevalence of active forms of tuberculosis exceeded the national rate for the entire study period.

Cancer Distribution Pattern in the City of Kenitra, Morocco (2017-2022): A Pathology-Based Study.

BACKGROUND Cancer epidemiological surveillance is essential for implementing an effective prevention policy. In Morocco, only two population-based cancer registries (Rabat and Casablanca), along with a limited number of local studies, provide data on cancer incidence. This report aims to describe the pattern of cancer incidence rates in the region of Kenitra. METHODS This was a pathology-laboratory-based retrospective and descriptive study of all newly diagnosed cancers in public and private pathology laboratories in Kenitra between January 2017 and December 2022. Data on gender, age, and cancer locations were collected from medical records. Statistical analysis was limited to descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, crude incidence rates, and age-standardized rates. RESULTS 2,682 cancer cases were recorded, with 1,535 males (57.23%) and 1,147 females (42.77%). The female-to-male ratio is 0.74. The median age at diagnosis was 59 (55 for females and 62 for males). The crude incidence rate was 254 per 100,000 population (291 per 100,000 for males and 217 per 100,000 for females). The overall age-standardized rate (ASR) was 283 per 100,000 (162 per 100,000 for males and 120 per 100,000 for females). The leading cancers among males were prostate (34.31%), bladder (19.27%), skin (13.54%), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (5.34%), stomach (3.97%), lung (3.84%), and colon (3.84%). The leading cancers among females were breast (27%), skin (15%), cervix (8%), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (5%), thyroid (5.49%), uterus (5%), and stomach (3.83%). CONCLUSION Our study is the first to explore the occurrence of cancers in the city of Kenitra. The high rates of bladder and skin cancer in this area warrant further epidemiological studies to identify etiological factors, develop control programs, and formulate prevention strategies.

Epidemiology of Breast Cancer among Women in Some Selected Hospitals in Zamfara State for the Year 2012-2021

Breast cancer is second cause of death in women and continue to be a threat globally, this study examined the epidemiology analysis of breast cancer in-patients in Zamfara State over 10 years period that spanned 2012 – 2021. The scope of the study covers three General hospitals in Zamfara State, Nigeria namely; Federal Medical Centre Gusau Zamfara State, General Hospital Gusau Zamfara State, and Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital Gusau Zamfara State. Data was sourced basically through secondary means from breast cancer incidence registers in the three hospitals of the study for the period of 2012 to 2021. The findings of the study show that breast cancer is prevalence among the female gender. The results from the analysis also showed that the prevalence of the disease differs among different age groups while the age range 50 to 59 seems to have the highest prevalence. For the young persons under 30 years, it was found that the incidence was very low, but for the elderly persons the incidence was very high. its recommended that health education or sensitization should be given along with regular breast cancer screening to women, especially post-menopausal women, and early regular screening for women in reproductive age group will help in early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

The state of cancer care for gastric cancer (C16) in Russia: a population-based analysis of survival and treatment effectiveness considering age and sex characteristics. Part 2 (clinical-population study)

The study is devoted to analyzing the dynamics of one-year and five-year survival rates of gastric cancer (GC) patients in the Northwestern Federal District of Russia (NWFD RF) at the population level, taking into account age and sex characteristics, as well as comparing real survival rates with official statistics data. The study used the database of the Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) of the NWFD RF, containing 88,572 verified cases of GC for the period 2000–2022. Observed and relative survival were calculated using a modified Eurocare program. It was found that one-year observed survival of GC patients increased from 37.4% (2000–2004) to 45.8% (2020–2022), an increase of 22.5%. This indicator is higher in women (47.5%) than in men (44.5%). Five-year observed survival (calculated up to 2014) increased from 17.0% to 19.1%. Median survival reached 10.5 months in women and 9.3 months in men. In patients under 50 years of age, one-year survival was 56.3% versus 44.9% in patients aged 50 and older, which refutes the common belief about a more aggressive course of cancer in young people. A significant discrepancy was revealed between official data (Form No. 7) and actual indicators: the reported proportion of early stages (43.2% on average in the Russian Federation) is significantly overestimated, while the actual five-year survival for stage I does not exceed 70% (compared to the expected ≥90%). An improvement in the quality of morphological verification was noted: the proportion of cases without morphological confirmation decreased from 23.3% to 9.2%. In the histological structure, adenocarcinoma without further specification predominates (66.0%). Despite the positive dynamics of survival, the real effectiveness of gastric cancer treatment remains insufficient due to late diagnosis and distortion of reporting data. The necessity of integrating population-based cancer registries into official statistics is substantiated.
