Abstract

This study examined the effect of number card-based learning media on number concept understanding among Grade II students at SDI Manumuti. It addressed students’ limited understanding associated with conventional teaching practices and insufficient use of concrete learning media. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample comprised all 17 Grade II students, selected through saturated sampling. Data were collected using pretest and posttest assessments and analyzed through descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, a paired-samples t-test, and effect size analysis. The results showed that the mean score increased from 58.23 before the intervention to 85.00 afterward, representing a mean gain of 26.77 points. The paired-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference (p < .001), while the effect size was classified as very large. These findings suggest that number card-based learning media can support improvements in students’ understanding of number concepts. Accordingly, number cards offer a promising concrete learning resource for Grade II mathematics instruction at SDI Manumuti, although the absence of a control group limits causal interpretation.
