Colorectal cancer incidence in Siberia and the Far East

Abstract

Objective

to analyze the incidence of colon cancer in the Siberian (SFD) and Far Eastern Federal Districts (FEFD) for 2019–2024.

Materials And Methods

a retrospective descriptive study of depersonalized data on the incidence of colorectal cancer (colon (C18), rectosigmoid junction (C19), rectum, anus and anal canal (C20-21) — ICD-10 codebook) was conducted for the period from January 2019 to December 2024 according to absolute data (the number of malignant neoplasms detected for the first time in life (table 2000) taking into account gender and age) of reporting forms No. 7 “Information on malignant neoplasms” of the subjects of the Siberian Federal District and the Far Eastern Federal District. Population data by gender and age for federal district subjects were provided by the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation. Standardized (world standard SEGI per 100,000 population (0/0000)) and age-specific incidence rates were calculated for 2019–2021 and 2022-2024. Differences in rates between periods were assessed using 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Results

in the structure of morbidity, colorectal cancer (CRC) consistently ranks 3rd among both men (12.0 and 11.1% in the Siberian Federal District and the Far Eastern Federal District) and women (11.5 and 10.8%). In the Siberian Federal District, standardized incidence rates when comparing 2019–2021 and 2022–2024 increased in the male population from 34.8 (95% CI 34.2–35.4) to 40.4 (95% CI 39.7–41.1) 0/0000 and in the female population from 24.4 (95% CI 24.0–24.9) to 26.7 (95% CI 26,2–27.1) 0/0000. In the Far Eastern Federal District — from 29.5 (95% CI 28.7–30.4) to 33.0 (95% CI 32.1–33.9) 0/0000 and from 22.3 (95% CI 21.7–22.9) to 24.4 (95% CI 23.8–25.1) 0/0000. In the Siberian Federal District, an increase in the incidence of CRC in men and women is observed after 45 years of age. The peak incidence occurs at 75–79 years, reaching 420.2 0/0000 in men and 252.0 0/0000 in women. In the FEFD, among men, the incidence increase is observed after age 50, with a peak at 75–79 years (377.3 0/0000); among women, after age 55, with the highest age-specific rate at 75–79 years (249.3 0/0000).

Conclusion

analysis of colorectal cancer incidence in the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts revealed an increase in rates among both sexes, with the highest values in age groups over 70 years, which indicates the relevance of introducing territorially adapted colon cancer screening programs, with a focus on high-risk groups taking into account age.

PANCREATIC CANCER IN THE FAR EASTERN FEDERAL DISTRICT (2015-2024)

Significance. The increasing incidence and mortality rates of cancer in the Far East population in recent decades provided the rationale for studying the characteristics of pancreatic cancer in this region. Purpose. To assess incidence and mortality patterns related to pancreatic cancer in the Far Eastern Federal District in 2015 – 2024 in comparison with Russian national rates. Material and methods. Data on morbidity and mortality from oncology service official reports, processed using standard oncology statistics programs. Results. In 2024, 1,192 new cases of malignant neoplasms of the pancreas were registered in the Far Eastern Federal District, which is 58.5% higher than the 2015 figures and 7.2% higher than the 2023 figures. The average incidence rate was 8.20±0. 11о/оооо (p=0.001), with an overall increase of 9.5% in both sexes. The rise was more pronounced in women (+21.4%), while a decrease was observed in men (−3.7 %). The insufficient level of pancreatic cancer active detection - 6.2% (2015 - 6.4%) did not lead to a significant increase in the number of patients diagnosed at stages I–II in 2015-2024 (25.7%). The patient cohort accumulation index remains low at 1.2 (2015: 1.1) against the backdrop of an unfavorable first-year mortality rate of 60.0% (Russia: 65.8%). This can be explained by a high level of disease advancement – 55.6% (2015: 64.8%). The average mortality rate (2014-2023) in males was 9.90±0.21о/оооо, p=0.005, which exceeded the female one – 5.90±0. 0,10о/оооо, p=0.001. Conclusion. By 2024, standardized morbidity and mortality rates for pancreatic cancer had increased in the Far Eastern Federal District, while the level of disease advancement at diagnosis remained high. A substantial improvement of the situation can be facilitated by early detection of patients at the initial stages of tumor development. This requires strengthening oncologist staffing in primary healthcare settings and improving the management of precancerous and predisposing conditions within a well‑structured preventive examination system, prioritizing high‑risk cancer groups. Scope of Application. The data obtained can be used in the development of regional programs for medical and social support for patients with pancreatic cancer. Incidence of Malignant Oral Cavity Tumors in the Republic of Serbia: Trend Analysis (1999–2020) and Projections to 2040

Background and Objectives: Malignant tumors of the oral cavity are an important and growing component of the global cancer burden, with well-documented sex disparities in incidence. This study aimed to characterize temporal trends in the incidence of these tumors in the Republic of Serbia between 1999 and 2020, overall and by sex, and to forecast incidence through 2040. Materials and Methods: All histopathologically verified cases (ICD-10: C01–C06, excluding the lip) reported to the Cancer Registry of the Republic of Serbia (excluding the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija, for which data are unavailable) were analyzed retrospectively. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs; world standard population) were calculated, and joinpoint regression estimated the annual percentage change (APC) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models projected incidence to 2040, with sensitivity analyses for the 2016 extension of Registry coverage. Results: A total of 5695 cases were registered (3872 men, 1823 women). Restricted to the population under consistent Registry coverage (Central Serbia, 1999–2015), incidence did not change significantly in either sex (men: APC = −0.30%, 95% CI: −1.63, 1.06; women: APC = −3.31%, 95% CI: −7.41, 0.96). Over the full 1999–2020 series, which includes the 2016 extension of coverage to Vojvodina, incidence appeared to rise among men (APC = 1.71%; 95% CI: 0.47, 2.96; p = 0.009), with an apparent acceleration after 2013 (APC = 8.39%; p = 0.002); a level-shift model and a formal comparison of competing trend descriptions both attributed this apparent rise to the 2016 coverage change rather than to a genuine trend (+50.7%; p < 0.001). Male incidence was about twice that in women (mean ASR 3.63 versus 1.64). Under an unchanged-coverage scenario, ARIMA models projected a flat mean incidence through 2040 (2.6 per 100,000 overall; 4.7 in men, with a 95% prediction interval widening from 3.6–5.8 in 2021 to 1.2–8.2 in 2040), with a considerably less precise and less reliable forecast for women. Conclusions: Oral cavity cancer incidence in Central Serbia was stable from 1999 to 2015, with a persistent male excess. The apparent post-2013 rise is attributable to the 2016 extension of registry coverage rather than to a genuine trend, and a counterfactual estimate suggests considerably higher incidence in Vojvodina. Region-stratified reporting is needed before national trends can be interpreted reliably.

Female breast cancer in Annaba Province, Algeria, 2004-2024: Temporal trends and characteristics.

INTRODUCTION Breast cancer is one of the most formidable health challenges of our time, claiming countless lives and profoundly impacting the well-being of women across the globe. The incidence of breast cancer is rising rapidly in low- and middle-income countries. This study examines the incidence of invasive malignant female breast cancer in the Annaba Province of Algeria between 2004 and 2024 by time, age, molecular subtype, stage and urban-rural residence. METHODS Descriptive variables were extracted from the Annaba population-based cancer registry database. Annual crude and age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs), overall and for specific populations, were calculated and reported per 100,000 women. Joinpoint regression was used to characterize trends between 2004 and 2024. RESULTS 4578 women were diagnosed with invasive malignant female breast cancer in the Annaba Province between 2004 and 2024. The ASR was 79.4 (95% CI, 70.9-88.6) per 100,000 women in 2024. Crude incidence rates increased at an annual percent change of 7.1 (95% CI, 5.5-13.0) until 2018, after which they remained statistically stable during a period that included the Covid-19 pandemic. The most rapid increase occurred among women aged 60 and older. Trends of incidence by molecular subtype showed no significant variation. Hormone-dependent tumors were the most commonly diagnosed. Younger women more frequently presented with aggressive molecular subtype and late-stage tumors. Although breast cancer incidence was higher among women residing in urban areas, a greater proportion of late-stage diagnoses was observed in rural areas. CONCLUSION Female breast cancer incidence increased sharply in Annaba Province until 2018 and appears to have plateaued since. The study found differential risk profile by age and urban rural residence. The findings support the implementation of targeted awareness campaigns aimed at improving early detection in rural areas and among younger women.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF BREAST CANCER IN MEN IN THE STATE OF TOCANTINS FROM 2020 TO 2024

Abstract: Male breast cancer is a rare neoplasm, accounting for approximately 1% of breast cancer cases, and is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages. This study aimed to define the epidemiological profile of male breast cancer in the state of Tocantins between 2020 and 2024. This is an observational, descriptive, quantitative, and retrospective study, conducted using secondary data obtained from the Oncology Panel (DATASUS), the Cancer Information System (SISCAN), and the Mortality Atlas of the National Cancer Institute (INCA). Variables related to diagnosis, age group, clinical staging, therapeutic modality, time to treatment initiation, mortality, and diagnostic characteristics of the cases were analyzed. Eighteen cases of male breast cancer were identified in Tocantins between 2020 and 2023, with the highest frequency in the 70-74 age group (16.7%). Among the cases with available staging, stage III predominated (33.3%). Surgery was the most frequently recorded therapeutic modality (38.9%), and 44.4% of patients started treatment within 30 days of diagnosis. Between 2020 and 2024, 10 deaths were recorded, with the highest concentration among individuals aged 70 to 79 years (30.0%). Complementary data from SISCAN showed a predominance of palpable lesions (70.0%) and frequent use of core needle biopsy (55.0%). It is concluded that the epidemiological profile of male breast cancer in Tocantins is characterized by the low frequency of the disease, predominance in elderly individuals, and a tendency towards diagnosis at more advanced stages, presenting characteristics similar to those described in the national and international literature.
