A Role of Daivavyapashraya Chikitsa in the Management of Anidra (Insomnia)
Abstract
Insomnia affects 10–30% of the global population, with some reports up to 60%, and about 28.1% of Indian adults experiencing sleep initiation or maintenance problems. It is associated with impaired cognition, psychiatric illnesses, cardiovascular disorders, reduced quality of life, and increased accident risk. In Ayurveda, Nidra is described as one of the Trayopasthambha vital for health, and its disturbance (Nidranasha/Anidra) is attributed to Vata Prakopa, Pitta Dushti, and depletion of Tarpaka Kapha, with Nidana such as sleep deprivation, excessive worry, sorrow, anger, over-exertion, and overindulgence of the senses; Acharyas explain that disturbed sleep leads to Depletion of vitality, psychological disturbance, Reduction of lifespan, and Manifestation of diseases. Daivavyapashraya in Samhita means “Daivaṃ Vyapasritya Kriyate” - that treatment which is undertaken by taking refuge in Daiva (Adrishta, past Karma, unseen factors) when the cause of disease is beyond Yukti. It includes measures like Mantra, Japa, Homa, Bali, Upavasa, Niyama, Praṇipata, and Yatra, aimed at pacifying Daivika influences. In Anidra (insomnia), it works by enhancing Sattva, reducing Manasika Vikaras like Chinta and Bhaya, and providing mental peace, thereby facilitating natural induction of Nidra.
