TL;DR

cLMS exhibits a moderate risk of local recurrence, low metastatic potential, and excellent disease-specific survival, and no data support adjuvant treatment.

Abstract

Background

Leiomysosarcoma (LMS) is generally associated with high metastatic potential and poor survival. Cutaneous LMS (cLMS) has been considered a different entity with more indolent biological behavior.

Methods

A narrative review was performed to assess the biological behavior of cLMS, with special attention for the head and neck location.

Results

cLMS is located in the head and neck in 21%-33%. The local recurrence rate is 2%-18%, while only 3% develops metastatic disease at 10 years. The most important risk factor of recurrent disease is positive/close surgical margins, with a trend for increased risk at the head and neck. The vast majority of recurrences are local and appear during the first few years. No data support adjuvant treatment. The 5-year disease-specific survival is 96%-100%.

Conclusions

cLMS exhibits a moderate risk of local recurrence, low metastatic potential, and excellent disease-specific survival. Surveillance may be focused on physical examination and limited in duration.

Primary tongue leiomyosarcoma.

Leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are malignant tumours of smooth muscle origin, accounting for about 7% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Head and neck LMS constitute less than 3% of all LMS. Intra-oral LMS are rare, making up only 0.01%-0.04% of all malignancies in the oral cavity. Tongue involvement is even rarer with very few case...

Recurrent Primary Angiosarcoma of the Breast: Challenges and Pitfalls in a Case Report.

AIM Primary breast angiosarcoma (PBA) is an exceptionally rare and highly aggressive vascular malignancy with poor prognosis, high recurrence rates, and limited evidence guiding management. We report a case of low- to intermediate-grade PBA characterized by multiple local recurrences and systemic progression but unusua...

Nasopharyngeal Leiomyosarcoma: Diagnostic Challenges and Management of a Rare Head and Neck Sarcoma

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare, smooth-muscle malignancy and an uncommon sinonasal tumor, often diagnosed at a late stage due to non-specific symptoms and complex anatomy. We report an 82-year-old man with a two-month history of facial pain, epistaxis, and right-sided hearing loss. Imaging and endoscopic evaluation sho...

Patterns of central nervous system and leptomeningeal involvement in advanced breast cancer with invasive lobular histology: a large multicenter study with a focus on estrogen receptor-positive/HER2-negative disease.

BACKGROUND Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is known to exhibit distinct metastatic patterns compared with carcinoma of no special type (NST); however, little is known about its specific propensity for central nervous system (CNS) and leptomeningeal (LM) involvement, particularly in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive/huma...
