Abstract

The rapid expansion of battery-grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) production from brines raises increasing concerns about future environmental impacts, which must be assessed in alignment with project commissioning timelines. Here, we assess the life cycle climate change and water scarcity impacts for 24 operating and announced brine-based Li2CO3 projects, accounting for future technology optimization and economy-wide decarbonization across the energy and chemical reagent sectors. These developments could reduce climate change impacts of individual projects by 26–89% by 2035. Substantial project-level mitigation does not necessarily translate into lower impact intensity in the Li2CO3 supply mix of these projects, which depends on the success of planned production capacity. Technology optimization and economy-wide decarbonization can only offset the higher impacts from announced projects, while achieving meaningful cuts requires a transition to electrified heating. This shift, combined with more resource-intensive direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies, may exacerbate water scarcity impacts beyond production sites. Building a sustainable lithium supply chain demands early mitigation to counterbalance higher impacts of upcoming projects, heat decarbonization as an immediate rather than long-term goal, accelerated decarbonization of soda ash and lime industries, and a supply chain-wide approach to water management.

Carbon Footprint of Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing: Measuring the Net Global Warming Impact of Localized Mineral Extraction vs. Shipping Supply Chains

The global transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage has driven unprecedented demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The environmental integrity of this transition, however, depends on the carbon burden embedded in battery supply chains. This study comparatively evaluates two supply-chain con...

Elevating CO2 electrolyzer temperature accelerates the viability of chemical electrification

Climate change mitigation has spurred interest in producing chemicals from CO2. CO2 reduction by electrochemistry can be driven directly by green electricity, yielding even multi-carbon (C2+) products. However, the resulting processes still suffer from high electrolyzer losses and substantial energy demands. This study...

Copper supply chain decarbonization for the energy transition must maximize copper recovery

Copper is the non-interchangeable and fungible conductor for every major sustainable energy transition technology, yet supply is constrained as demand accelerates. Expanding solar, wind, battery storage, and electric cars requires carbon-intensive copper production. In this perspective, a conceptual metric, Decarboniza...

Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Assessment of Biogas-to-Hydrogen Production: Comparison of Pre-Reforming Decarbonization and Direct Reforming Routes

Biogas-to-hydrogen production provides a renewable pathway to decarbonize hydrogen supply, yet consensus remains lacking regarding the most energetically and economically favorable process configuration. This study develops steady-state Aspen Plus models for two 40,000 Nm3·d−1 biogas-to-hydrogen routes—pre-reforming de...

Assessing the Hydrogen Supply Chain from an Eco-Design Perspective: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainability

Hydrogen (H2) is widely regarded as a key energy vector for the transition to a low-carbon energy economy, yet its production, storage, and distribution remain associated with significant environmental burdens. This review analyses the entire low-emission H2 value chain from an eco-design perspective, synthesising rece...
