TL;DR

Short-wide implants appeared to exhibit a more favourable stability pattern during the observation period; however, larger studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract

The rehabilitation of localised vertical ridge deficiency in posterior jaws often requires short implants to avoid invasive grafting. However, the influence of implant dimensions on the transition from primary to secondary stability remains a subject of investigation. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effect of short-wide implants (5.0 mm diameter and 8.0 mm length) versus standard-length implants (4.2 mm diameter and 10.0 mm length) on primary and secondary stability at various time intervals using resonance frequency analysis (RFA). Twenty-two implants were placed in healed molar sites (Test group: Short-Wide Implants; Control group: Standard-length Implants). Stability was measured using the Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) via RFA (Osstell) at placement, 3 weeks, 3 months and 9 months. Data were analysed using Student’s t -test and Repeated Measures analysis of variance ( P < 0.05). In the test group, the mean ISQ increased progressively from 60.10 ± 18.41 (baseline) to 80.70 ± 2.63 (9 months). In contrast, the control group exhibited a significant stability dip at 3 weeks (49.56 ± 12.18) compared to its baseline (56.00 ± 18.12), followed by an increase to 75.89 ± 9.29 at 9 months. The test group showed significantly higher stability than the control at 3 weeks ( P = 0.001) and 9 months ( P = 0.043). Short-wide implants appeared to exhibit a more favourable stability pattern during the observation period; however, larger studies are required to confirm these findings.

Additively Manufactured Implants for Mandibular Overdentures: RCT Part 1 - Clinical and Peri-Implant Outcomes

Abstract This study reported preliminary clinical outcomes of a randomized clinical trial comparing immediate and conventional loading protocols for mandibular overdentures supported by two narrow-diameter implants with a regular platform manufactured by additive technology. The focus was on primary implant stability,...

Primary stability of short implants compared with standard implants placed with a simulated closed sinus floor elevation technique: an in vitro study

Primary implant stability is a key determinant of successful osseointegration, particularly in the posterior maxilla, where bone quality is often compromised. Short implants have been proposed as an alternative to sinus floor elevation; however, data comparing their primary stability with that of standard implant...

The Long-Term Impact of Single Implant-Supported Crowns on Adjacent Natural Teeth: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study.

Single implant-supported restorations significantly elevate the incidence of caries, new restorations, and tooth loss in adjacent teeth relative to controls, and susceptibility to carious lesions and restorative interventions represents a persistent, long-term morbidity.

Short Dental Implants as Strategic Support for Removable Partial Dentures in Mandibular Free-End Situations: A 3-Year Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the mid-term clinical performance of short implants as strategic support for mandibular removable partial dentures (RPDs) with free-end situations. METHODS Subjects wearing lower RPDs in Kennedy Class I situations received two supporting posterior implants. After the healing phas...

Marginal bone level changes and soft-tissue esthetics around implants with convergent transmucosal profiles: 10-year retrospective analysis

The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the long-term stability of marginal bone levels (MBL) and the Pink Esthetic Score (PES) in a cohort of patients treated with tissue-level implants featuring a convergent transmucosal profile. A retrospective longitudinal analysis was conducted on 108 patients who recei...

Single Versus Double Implants in a Narrowed Mandibular Molar Space: A Finite Element Analysis

After molar loss, tipping of the adjacent teeth and extrusion of the opposing tooth often leave a mesiodistal space too narrow for a conventional implant. This study compared stress in the implant components and peri-implant bone among single- and double-implant configurations of different diameters in such a space. A...
