Unique Charge-density-wave Order and Fluctuation-induced Phonon Softening in the Optimally-doped Trilayer Cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+\delta}$
Charge-density-wave (CDW) order is a ubiquitous feature of cuprate superconductors that competes with superconductivity. However, its behavior remains poorly understood in trilayer compounds, which contain the optimal number of CuO$_2$ layers for superconductivity. Here, we report Cu $L_3$- and O $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of optimally-doped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{10+\delta}$ (Bi2223), the trilayer cuprate with the highest superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) among Bi-based cuprates. We observe CDW order with a single in-plane wavevector of ${\bm q}_{\text{CDW}} = (0.25, 0)$, demonstrating that a coherent CDW order is formed across the trilayers. We also resolve CDW fluctuations emanating from the static order, whose profiles differ between the Cu $L_3$ and O $K$ edges. The phonon softening occurs where these CDW fluctuations interact with the phonon branch, indicating that the RIXS phonon anomaly is driven by the coupling between CDW fluctuations and the phonon branch.
The recent realization of bulk superconductivity in the quintuple-layer nickelate La$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ opens new opportunities to probe the pairing symmetry of the reduced Ruddlesden--Popper (RP) nickelate family. Using an effective five-layer Hubbard model and variational Monte Carlo calculations, we find that a spin-...

In La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_4$/La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LSCO/LCO) artificial high-$T_c$ superlattices (AHTS), grown by quantum material design, the superconducting dome can be tuned by varying the geometric ratio $L/d$, where $L$ is the LCO layer thickness and $d$ is the superlattice nanoscale period. Here, we combine hard X-r...

The vanadium-based kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ exhibits an intricate interplay between charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity (SC). Substituting Ta for V will suppress the CDW order and enhance superconductivity. Here, we report a high-pressure study up to 48 GPa on Ta-doped Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_...
YRu$_3$Si$_2$ and LaRu$_3$Si$_2$ host the highest charge density wave (CDW) transition temperatures ever reported in kagome metals, $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}\approx 800$ and 400~K, with propagation vectors $Q_{\mathrm{CDW}}\approx(1/2,0,0)$ and $(1/4,0,0)$, respectively. The microscopic mechanism behind these record values has...

Geometrically frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnets exhibit a delicate competition between magnetic order and quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior, with the Yb-based delafossite family $A$Yb$X_2$ providing a structurally clean platform for exploring this physics. Here, we report a comprehensive study of single-c...
