Abstract
We present VIVID (Vietnamese Idioms for Validation and Interpretation Depth), the first systematic benchmark for evaluating culturally grounded figurative language understanding in Vietnamese. VIVID comprises 1,636 idioms and proverbs annotated with five complexity traits (literal expressions, pragmatic nuances, Sino-Vietnamese terms, uncommon vocabulary, folk knowledge) and seven semantic themes. We establish an evaluation framework combining generative and discriminative tasks, proposing an LLM-as-a-Judge approach with aspect-based prompting validated against human judgment (Cohen's kappa = 0.792). Evaluating eight state-of-the-art models reveals critical gaps: Vietnamese-specialized models drastically underperform multilingual systems (VinaLLaMA-7B: 0.13 vs. GPT-4o: 2.46), and even top models achieve less than 50% of maximum scores. Notably, few-shot prompting does not universally improve performance, with GPT-4o exhibiting degradation due to stylistic overfitting. Our analysis exposes systematic failures including literal over-interpretation, lexical gaps, and pragmatic flattening, demonstrating that current models lack cultural competence for nuanced figurative interpretation. VIVID provides an essential tool for advancing figurative language understanding in culturally rich contexts.
Vision Language Models have achieved strong performance on multimodal benchmarks, yet their ability to reason about culturally grounded and metaphor-rich content remains insufficiently studied. Internet memes present a challenging setting where meaning emerges from implicit interactions between image, overlaid text, sarcasm, and shared socio-cultural knowledge rather than literal visual recognition. This challenge is amplified in low-resource languages such as Bangla, where code-mixing, stylized scripts, and culturally specific symbolism introduce substantial distribution shift. In this work, we introduce BanglaMemeX, a culturally grounded multimodal benchmark comprising 3,000 Bangla memes annotated with multi-dimensional labels (humor, sarcasm, offensiveness, motivational intent, and overall sentiment) and human-written explanations that explicitly describe textual and visual metaphors. We systematically evaluate modern VLMs on both classification and explanation generation, revealing that current models struggle to interpret implicit cultural cues despite reasonable surface-level accuracy. Our results highlight the need for culturally-aware multimodal systems capable of grounded reasoning under linguistic and cultural distribution shift.

Meme understanding goes beyond recognizing visual content or literal text; it requires implicit cultural knowledge and pragmatic inference that most vision-language models still lack. We introduce MemeCULT-1K, a multilingual benchmark of 1,000 South Asian memes in Bengali, English, and Hindi, where each meme is paired with a cultural context note and three human-written explanations, along with a supplementary set of 54 Bengali regional dialect memes. We evaluate thirteen popular Vision Language Models (VLMs) under two settings: meme-only and context-aware. Providing minimal cultural context yields consistent gains across all models and languages: mean SBERT similarity improves from 44.6 to 56.4 (+11.8), BLEURT from 37.3 to 42.3 (+5.0), and LLM-as-a-Judge scores from 2.57 to 3.43 out of 5 (+0.86). Fine-grained error analysis reveals that closed-source models fail mainly on entity and reference misidentification, while open-source models are bottlenecked by broader cultural knowledge gaps, with linguistic and phonological failures proving the most context-resistant across both. These results highlight the difficulty of culturally grounded meme understanding and motivate future work on explicit cultural knowledge integration. We introduce grounded glossary generation, a structured task requiring models to recover semantically meaningful Sanskrit phrases and produce translation-grounded meanings from a sloka-translation pair, formalizing the traditional patha commentary practice as an evaluable NLP objective. We construct a benchmark of 31,316 sloka-translation-glossary triples from the Valmiki Ramayana and Srimad Bhagavatam, paired with two metrics: Jaccard for phrase recovery and Meaning Faithfulness for semantic consistency. Across zero-shot, few-shot, and instruction fine-tuned variants of Gemma-3n-E4B, Gemma-3-12B, Phi-4, and Qwen3.5-9B, instruction fine-tuning substantially outperforms prompting, while explicit segmentation yields gains. Error analysis identifies over-segmentation of sandhi and samasa compounds as the dominant failure mode, pointing to morphological modeling as the key bottleneck for faithful Sanskrit lexical decomposition.

Although multilingual approaches to figurative language identification are not new, the shift beyond language homogeneous training data requires a clearer understanding of the contribution of translated multilingual supervision. We examine this question using 742 proverb concepts across 6,787 translated instances in seven languages. We evaluate five models, including multilingual encoders and instruction tuned LLMs, under progressively increasing levels of multilingual supervision. Moreover, we introduce a multidimensional annotation framework for proverbs that characterizes them through four complementary figurative forms: Metaphorical, Moral/Advisory, Cause-Effect, and Culture Specific. Our findings show that approximately 50% of the translated multilingual training data is sufficient to achieve near-optimal figurative language identification performance. We further show that combining diverse figurative forms yields the strongest overall performance. A notable finding is that the least frequent figurative form, Culture Specific, exhibits the largest performance gains under multilingual supervision. Furthermore, the Moral/Advisory and Culture Specific forms contribute most to the performance of instruction-tuned LLMs on figurative language identification. These findings motivate multilingual figurative language identification to move beyond metaphor-centric taxonomies toward concept level multidimensional frameworks that explicitly model complementary forms of figurative meaning.

Culturally loaded translation poses unique challenges for machine translation (MT), as meanings are deeply embedded in socio-cultural contexts beyond surface linguistic forms. Although large language models (LLMs) have enabled MT systems to achieve human-like quality in many scenarios, their ability to handle culturally loaded expressions remains underexplored. In this study, we systematically investigate the challenges posed by culturally loaded translation in LLM-based MT systems. We construct a Chinese-Japanese bilingual dataset from the culturally representative corpus Dream of the Red Chamber, containing 500 segments across diverse cultural categories. Using a comprehensive evaluation protocol, we reveal three main challenges: (1) task challenges, where frontier LLMs exhibit notable performance gaps and struggle with culturally loaded content; (2) human evaluation challenges, where evaluator backgrounds lead to substantial disagreement in translation judgments; and (3) automatic evaluation challenges, where widely used metrics fail to reliably assess translation quality for this task. These findings may offer valuable insights for culture-oriented translation research in both computational science and linguistics.
