Abstract
This study examines the exhaust emission characteristics of a diesel engine operating with and without thermostat installation in the cooling system, focusing on carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. An experimental research design with a comparative approach was employed, in which a single-cylinder diesel engine test unit was tested under two cooling system configurations at a constant engine speed of 1500 rpm using a portable exhaust gas analyzer. The results show that installing the thermostat helped the engine reach a more stable and higher coolant temperature, which improved combustion completeness and reduced CO and HC emissions compared with the condition without a thermostat, although it also led to a slightly higher NOx concentration. These findings indicate that thermostat installation plays an important role in diesel engine thermal management and combustion quality, and that its emission benefits should be balanced with complementary NOx-control strategies for more comprehensive emission reduction
Diesel engines offer the highest efficiency compared to other internal combustion engines, and are therefore widely used in industry and transport. However, exhaust emissions from the combustion of diesel fuel pose a threat to the environment and human health. As a preventive measure, research has been conducted with t...

This study aims to determine the effect of thermostat use on the fuel consumption of the C223 diesel engine, as well as the operating conditions that result in the most significant difference in fuel consumption between engines with and without a thermostat. The study was motivated by the overcooling that occurs when t...

Despite their advantages, such as high efficiency, high torque output, and high durability, diesel engines have considerable potential for further efficiency gains and emissions reductions. Therefore, this study investigates a conventional compression-ignition engine operating in dual-fuel mode with 10% ammonia by ener...

Under the dual pressures of energy security and environmental protection, biodiesel has emerged as a promising clean fuel for diesel engines due to its renewability and low soot emissions. However, its combustion and emission characteristics still require optimization for practical application. To address the limitatio...

Ammonia can partially replace diesel in compression ignition engines, but the relative influences of the ammonia energy ratio (AER), pilot–main injection timing advance, and injection pressure on engine performance remain insufficiently quantified. This study evaluated these influences in an ammonia–diesel engine at 10...
