Abstract

Ecosystem services (ESs) are the benefits that humans derive from ecosystems. Clarifying their spatiotemporal changes and driving factors is fundamental to regional ecological security. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) is one of the most urbanized and human-disturbed regions in China. This study quantified six ecosystem service indicators—net primary productivity (NPP), water yield (WY), sediment retention (SR), habitat quality (HQ, a biodiversity-maintenance index), crop production (CP), and carbon storage (TC)—during 2000–2020, and identified their driving factors, non-linear responses, and apparent thresholds by integrating the Theil–Sen/Mann–Kendall test, XGBoost with SHAP, and structural equation modeling (SEM). NPP, SR, and CP increased significantly, TC decreased (p < 0.001), and WY and HQ showed no significant trend. Slope dominated NPP, SR, CP, and TC, whereas precipitation dominated WY and HQ; spatial block cross-validation R2 ranged from 0.68–0.97. Topography (slope, elevation) and climate (precipitation) were the core driving factors, providing a quantitative basis for ecological conservation.

Assessing synergies and trade-offs among water yield, sediment retention, and carbon storage in Yunnan Province, China.

Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics and interactions of ecosystem services (ES) is critical for regional ecological governance. Taking Yunnan Province, a key ecological barrier in southwestern China, this study quantified water yield (WY), sediment retention (SR), and carbon storage (CS) from 1980 to 2022 using t...

Spatiotemporal Variations, Trade-Offs and Synergies, and Socio-Ecological Driving Factors of Ecosystem Services in the Poyang Lake Basin: Implications for Differentiated Ecological Management

Due to the combined effects of climate change and intensified human activities, large lake basins are often at risk of severe degradation of ecosystem services (ESs). To develop scientifically rigorous and effective strategies for managing ESs, this study focuses on the Poyang Lake Basin (PYLB) as the research area. By...

Unraveling the Land-Water-Ecology Nexus and Water-Ecological Function Mismatch: Drivers of Aquatic Ecosystem Integrity in the Yellow River Basi

In the water-stressed Yellow River Basin (YRB), land-use intensification (LUI) severely threatens water-related ecosystem services (WRES) critical for regional aquatic integrity. This study evaluates the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of Habitat Quality (HQ, reflecting watershed regulation) and Biodiversity Conser...

Spatiotemporal variation of net primary productivity and its climate-landscape-human drivers in the Yellow River Basin of Inner Mongolia

The Yellow River Basin (YRB) in Inner Mongolia serves as an important ecological barrier and a major carbon sink within northern China, and is facing a considerable ecological vulnerability and substantial pressures due to climate change, urbanization, and agricultural development. This study takes a landscape architec...
