Abstract In this paper, I analyze the crosslinguistic variation in visual perception events in terms of event construals and their usage in discourse. Through an innovative computational analysis of a comparable corpus of 31 typologically diverse languages, I demonstrate that the crosslinguistic variation is governed by two dimensions of construal: the profiling of the Stimulus, and the way in which the Experiencer is construed to exert effort. Whether languages draw lexical boundaries in the conceptual field (some do, others don’t) is furthermore correlated with variation in the usage of construals: a greater prevalence of bridging contexts between the crosslinguistically most often separately lexified extremes (and accompanying opposite construals) is found be associated with drawing a lexical boundary. As such, this paper grounds semantic typological explanation in notions of event construal and a usage-based conception of linguistic structure.
Directional motion is a fundamental domain through which humans conceptualize spatial experience and represent it linguistically. This study examines the semantic typology of directional motion verbs in English and Uzbek, focusing on the interaction of path, manner, orientation, and deictic perspective. Drawing on lite...

Abstract This paper proposes a syntactic analysis of the discourse marker ti: in Tunisian Arabic, traditionally viewed as a truth-value irrelevant verbal disfluency. Contrary to this perception, the study reveals ti: as a communicatively salient element with distinctive properties that are best explained through a synt...
Linguistic typology seeks to describe the structural diversity of the world's languages and to explain the recurrent patterns, or universals, that constrain this diversity. A central but often under-examined concept within this enterprise is metacoding: the principled allocation of formal marking resources, such as cas...
