Abstract

To clarify the differences and mechanisms of response between flexible and semi-rigid base asphalt pavements under cyclic loading, a systematic comparative study was conducted through cyclic loading tests, with surface displacement and base top/bottom strain as the core indicators. The results show that the displacement of the two types of pavement surface layers and the strain of the base layer both exhibit a three-stage cumulative evolution of “initial stability-slow growth-accelerated failure” with the load, and the response is synchronized with the load action. The displacement of the flexible-base pavement surface layer (2.5-8 mm) and the amplitude of the base strain are larger, and the base layer remains continuously under tension. The displacement of the semi-rigid-base pavement surface layer (2-6.5 mm) is concentrated, the elastic rebound is obvious, and the strain amplitude of the base layer is small; moreover, the brittleness increases suddenly in the later stage. The root cause of the difference lies in the modulus and deformation characteristics of the base material: the high modulus of the semi-rigid base layer is subjected to force as a rigid plate, while the low-modulus viscoelasticity of the flexible base layer forms a synergistic deformation of the composite beam. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the selection of asphalt pavement structure, anti-fatigue design, and optimization of service performance.

ANALYSIS OF THE STRESS-STRAIN STATE OF AN ELASTIC WORKING TOOL OF A DISC HARROW UNDER A TWO-STEP LOADING MODEL

The paper considers the stress-strain state of an elastic working tool of a disc harrow under a two-step loading model. The object of the study is the disc-to-frame attachment assembly, consisting of a disc, an elastic stand and an intermediate bracket connecting the stand to the disc axle; according to operational dat...

Numerical simulation study on plastic buckling of thin-walled aluminum alloy tubing under cyclic bending

The 6061-T6 thin-walled tube material is prone to cyclic plastic buckling failure during rotational straightening and reciprocating bending service. In actual rotational straightening production lines and long-term reciprocating bending service, the tube bears repeated alternating positive/negative bending curvature lo...

Numerical Investigation of Deformation Response and Stress-Path Evolution in a Multilayer Road System Under Repeated Moving Vehicle Loads

Under the cyclic traffic loading, roads often experience deformation accumulation, which impairs their service performance and shortens their service life. Therefore, investigating such issues is of great importance to road engineering. This study develops a multi-layer finite element model for an unsaturated road syst...

Performance of Flexible Pavement Using Biaxial Geogrids: A Mechanistic Approach Using IITPAVE Software

Flexible pavements under heavy traffic must control fatigue cracking in the bituminous layer and permanent deformation in the subgrade. This study examines whether biaxial geogrid reinforcement can reduce pavement thickness for a design traffic of 175 million standard axles (msa), 9% subgrade CBR and 90% reliability.Th...
