Abstract

Blockchain transaction fraud detection is a critical challenge as cryptocurrency adoption grows rapidly. Graph neural networks (GNNs) and temporal models show potential, but key questions persist about their advantages over tabular baselines, stability in realistic class distributions, and the true predictive value of temporal patterns. This paper presents a systematic empirical study across two real-world blockchain datasets-the Bitcoin Elliptic dataset and an Ethereum phishing dataset-comparing ten models including classical machine learning (ML) methods, five GNN architectures, a Temporal-Aware Graph Attention Network (ATGAT), and a Hybrid ATGAT+XGBoost ensemble. Experiments are conducted under both balanced (50:50) and imbalanced settings using strict temporal splits to prevent future leakage. Our results reveal that XGBoost remains a formidable baseline, achieving $\mathrm{F} {1}={0.6889}$ and $\text{ROC-AUC}=\{0.8731\}$ on Bitcoin, while GNN-only approaches consistently underperform under temporal evaluation. The Hybrid model achieves competitive performance $(\mathrm{F} {1} {=} {0.6816}$ on Bitcoin; ROC-AUC ={0.9874} on Ethereum) and provides more robust generalisation than pure GNN models, though it does not clearly surpass standalone XGBoost on Bitcoin. Temporal fraud rate analysis confirms that fraud dynamics evolve over time, motivating temporal-aware architectures even when their measured gains are modest.

Detecting Suspicious Transactions in Blockchain Networks Using Temporal Graph AI

Bitcoin and Ethereum record every transaction on a public ledger, yet criminals conceal illicit activity by routing funds through long chains of intermediate addresses. Simple rule-based tools miss these patterns and produce high volumes of false alerts. This paper presents an explainable AI framework that models block...

LLM-Guided Temporal Graph Neural Network for Illicit Transaction Detection in Blockchain Networks

Illicit transaction detection in blockchain networks is important for cryptocurrency anti-money laundering and other on-chain financial applications. Detecting suspicious transactions is challenging because illicit behaviors are often reflected through cross-entity fund-flow dependencies, temporal transaction evolution...

Adversarially Robust and Explainable Graph Neural Networks for Fraud Detection in Dynamic Blockchain Networks: A Problem-Based Systematic Literature Review

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have emerged as an effective approach for blockchain fraud detection because they can model complex relationships among transactions and participating entities. However, existing GNN-based approaches remain limited by vulnerability to adversarial manipulation, limited explainability, contin...

Detecting NFT Wash Trading with Temporal Graph Networks: A Comparison of Class Imbalance Handling Strategies

The risk of market manipulation, especially wash trading—where colluding parties repeatedly trade the same asset to create false trading volume and misleading market signals—has increased due to the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) marketplaces’ rapid growth. The temporal nature of blockchain transactions and the stark class d...
