TL;DR

These results show that, in the controlled direct illumination setting, compact beta surfels combined with transport-based optimization can recover surfaces without relying on the tens to hundreds of thousands of primitives used by the evaluated baselines.

Abstract

Sparse view 3D reconstruction is commonly addressed with neural implicit surfaces or dense point-based representations such as Gaussian splatting. Surface-aware splatting methods improve extracted geometry through oriented primitives and regularization, while RadiosityGS incorporates differentiable light transport through a radiosity inspired finite-element surfel formulation. We propose a differentiable point rendering method based on opacity-bearing beta surfels. An opacity explicit adjoint light transport formulation provides gradients for surfel geometry and appearance parameters, allowing physically based light transport to constrain reconstruction. Across five synthetic objects reconstructed from ten posed views, our method achieves the lowest mean symmetric Chamfer distance among the evaluated baselines and reduces mean Chamfer distance by 28.5% relative to the strongest point-based baseline while using only 267 surfels on average, approximately ~161 fewer primitives. Directional Chamfer results further show improved accuracy and competitive completion relative to related point-based methods. These results show that, in the controlled direct illumination setting, compact beta surfels combined with transport-based optimization can recover surfaces without relying on the tens to hundreds of thousands of primitives used by the evaluated baselines.

Surfsvr: 2D Surface Priors as 3D Geometric Regularizers for Sparse Voxel Reconstruction

Sparse voxel reconstruction offers an efficient representation for high-fidelity 3D modeling, yet its geometry is commonly optimized from local photometric evidence and discrete visibility statistics. This often leads to fragmented surfaces, excessive subdivision, and floating artifacts, particularly in weakly textured or sparsely observed regions. We introduce SurfSVR, a novel sparse voxel reconstruction paradigm that treats 2D surface priors as explicit 3D geometric regularizers. Instead of directly lifting noisy pixel-wise depth predictions, SurfSVR first organizes each image into coherent surface regions by jointly reasoning over appearance, monocular depth, normals and cross-view geometry. Each region is then represented by an adaptively selected planar or quadratic surface model based on fitting reliability and geometric complexity, while cross-model agreement distinguishes reliable geometry from ambiguous predictions. These structured 2D priors are lifted into 3D and integrated throughout the reconstruction pipeline. They guide surface-adaptive voxel subdivision, provide region-level depth and normal supervision during optimization, enhance geometrically reliable sparse-observed surfaces in voxel pruning, and suppress off-surface floaters during post-refinement training. This unified design converts semantic and geometric coherence in image space into persistent structural constraints in 3D. Extensive experiments on 3 public benchmarks demonstrate that SurfSVR consistently improves sparse voxel reconstruction across scenes with substantially different visibility and geometry characteristics, achieving state-of-the-art reconstruction quality. Codes and models will be released soon.

Shape-guided Gaussian Splatting for Sparse-View X-ray 3D Reconstruction

Sparse-view X-ray 3D reconstruction is essential for reducing radiation exposure, but recovering a density field from a handful of X-ray projections is severely ill-posed. Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting has achieved state-of-the-art performance in sparse-view reconstruction by representing the volume using explicit, optimized primitives, but it requires dozens of projected views. With fewer views, reconstruction quality degrades severely since the explicit primitives are optimized freely without any anatomical information. Anatomical structures, in contrast, share similar geometry and density across a population. Their variations are bounded within a limited range that statistical shape models can capture. This paper proposes a shape-guided Gaussian splatting framework for sparse-view X-ray 3D reconstructions. Our contribution lies in driving Gaussian positions toward anatomically valid configurations, alongside atlas-based density regularization. Our method ensures anatomically consistent reconstruction and improves PSNR by 2.83 dB over a state-of-the-art Gaussian splatting baseline with as few as 5 views. Appearance-aware Scaling Diffusion Model for 3D Point Cloud Upsampling

Abstract. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds are widely used for large-scale 3D scene understanding, but acquiring dense ALS data remains costly and sparse observations often exhibit incomplete vertical structures and uneven sampling. Existing diffusion-based point cloud upsampling methods have shown promise, yet conditioning only on sparse point coordinates often leads to noisy surfaces, boundary artifacts, and limited structural recovery in under-observed regions. In this work, we propose the Appearance-aware Scaling Diffusion Model (ASDM), a conditional diffusion framework for scene-level ALS point cloud upsampling that incorporates multi-view projected depth-image cues derived directly from the input point cloud. Specifically, sparse ALS scenes are rendered from multiple virtual viewpoints to generate projected depth images, which provide complementary structural information for guiding the denoising process. These projected-image features are fused with sparse point features to improve geometric fidelity and scene-level consistency. For training and evaluation, we construct realistic sparse–dense scene pairs from aerial LiDAR data derived from the YUTO Semantic dataset using a region-disjoint split over 13 survey areas. Experiments under the ×4 upsampling setting show that ASDM outperforms recent diffusion-based baselines, achieving the best overall performance in Chamfer Distance (0.5643), JSD-3D (0.6688), F1-score (75.67), and voxelized IoU at 1m and 2m resolutions. These results demonstrate that projected-image conditioning is an effective strategy for robust airborne LiDAR scene densification.
