Abstract

A constant line-of-sight acceleration (LOSA) of the centre-of-mass of a quasi-circular compact binary coalescence (CBC) leads to modulations in the gravitational-wave (GW) waveform at $-4$ post-Newtonian (PN) order. In our previous work, we calculated the phase and amplitude corrections only for the $(\ell,m) = (2,2)$ mode. The gravitational wave event GW190814 has recently attracted considerable attention because it has been suggested to provide evidence for a nonzero LOSA. However, several LOSA analyses of GW190814 employ higher-order-mode waveform models, such as \texttt{IMRPhenomXPHM}, while incorporating LOSA corrections only for the dominant (2,2) mode. This approximation assumes that their omission has a negligible impact on parameter estimation. In this paper, we present a self-consistent implementation of LOSA in a higher-mode waveform model by deriving the corresponding phase and amplitude corrections. We show that these corrections are essential for asymmetric binaries such as GW190814 and that neglecting them biases parameter inference. We also discuss inconsistencies in the derivation and implementation of LOSA corrections in waveform models in the literature that include higher-order modes.

Line-of-sight Acceleration Driven Effects in Eccentric Compact Binary Coalescences

The line-of-sight acceleration (LOSA) effect, imprinted in the gravitational wave (GW) signal of an inspiralling compact binary by an external gravitational potential, is one of the most promising means of probing the environment of compact binaries on a single-event basis. However, this effect is potentially degenerat...

Efficient time-domain eccentric model for Galactic binaries in LISA

Galactic binaries are expected to be the most numerous long-lived sources in the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) data stream and are commonly modeled as quasi-circular, nearly monochromatic systems. In this work we present \texttt{eGB-multi}, a fast time-domain eccentric Galactic-binary waveform package for L...

Anisotropic wind in tidal disruption events

Over the coming years, the number of tidal disruption events (TDEs) is expected to substantially increase with observations from the Vera Rubin Observatory (g and r band) and {\it ULTRASAT} (near UV) wide-field surveys. These future samples have great promise to characterize the bottom end of the massive black hole mas...

A new method for inspiral-to-ringdown waveforms of compact binaries: Helmholtz orbits and spherical-Bessel flux

The waveform is obtained from one balance of energy and radiation on Helmholtz orbits of the retarded mass kernel, with a spherical-Bessel flux. That balance follows from the Dirac--Maxwell equation with a modified vertex, the single $U(1)$ coupling being replaced by the eight operators of the source interaction. After...

Enabling gravitational-wave astronomy with spin-precessing black holes on generic orbits

Binary black holes (BBHs) formed in dense stellar environments or in hierarchical triples can coalesce on eccentric orbits and carry spins of arbitrary orientation, leaving distinctive imprints on their gravitational-wave (GW) emission. We present SEOBNRv6EPHM: the first generic-orbit, spin-precessing model in the effe...

Binary-lens amplification of starlight: from magnification flares to quasi-periodic tracking of orbital evolution

Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHB) are expected at the center of galaxies as a result of galaxy mergers. The dynamics and evolution of SMBHBs shed light on the evolution and formation of galaxies, the gravitational wave background and the nature of gravity. Many methods have been proposed to identify sub-parsec S...
