Phytobiotesting for the assessment of ecotoxicity of oil-contaminated soils

2026 · University proceedings Volga region Natural sciences · 0 citations

Abstract

Background. Oil pollution of soils is one of the most common forms of anthropo genic impact, leading to disruption of the functioning of soil ecosystems and a decrease in their biological activity. In this regard, it is an urgent task to develop and apply sensitive, informative and environmentally sound methods for assessing the ecotoxicity of contami nated soils. The purpose of this study was a comprehensive assessment of the phytotoxic and genotoxic effects of oil-contaminated soils using phytobiotesting at model facilities Allium cepa L. and Lemna minor L. Materials and methods. The objects of the study were water extracts from soils with varying degrees of oil pollution (3 and 6%). The Allium test and Lemna test were used as test systems. Phytotoxicity was assessed based on germination, root growth, and morphometric characteristics of plants. The genotoxic effect was determined by the method of anatophase analysis with the calculation of the mitotic index and the frequency of chromosomal aberrations. The morphoanatomic state of Lemna minor L. tissues was stud ied using light microscopy and safranin staining. Results. It has been established that oil pol lution of the soil has a pronounced dose-dependent effect on the growth, cytogenetic and morphoanatomic parameters of test plants. At 3% contamination, inhibition of root for mation, a decrease in the mitotic index, and an increase in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations were observed. At 6% concentration, growth of Allium cepa L. roots was stimulated against the background of a sharp increase in genotoxic effects, as well as pronounced growth inhibition and tissue damage of Lemna minor L. Structural disorders of the epidermis, stomata, and parenchyma cells were revealed, indicating a high level of phytotoxicity of the studied soils. Conclusions. The complex application of Allium and Lemna tests al lows for an objective integrated assessment of the ecotoxicity of oil-contaminated soils and can be recommended for environmental monitoring and bioindication of the state of soil ecosystems.

Influence of sorbents on phytotoxicity of soils of technogenic ecotopes

This work aimed to study the effect of sorbents on the phytotoxicity of soils of heaps by changing the values of germination energy and seed viability, as well as morphometric indicators of model plants. Three dumps were selected as the objects of research - two rock dumps (Kalinin mine, Zaperevalnaya mine and one dump...

POSSIBLE METHODS FOR DETERMINING SOIL PHYTOTOXICITY USING BIOINDICATION METHODS

The article analyzes three approaches to bioindication of phytotoxicity of soils: the method of seedlings, the method of soil plates and the method of water extracts. The sprouting method is convenient for quick diagnosis, as it requires a minimum of equipment and gives results in 3-7 days. The soil plate method is mor...

Assessment of the toxicity of soils subject to pyrogenic effects using the phytoindication method

The article presents the results of studies of the phytotoxicity of the soil cover of lands in the territories of the forest fund of the Ryazan region exposed to pyrogenic effects (Spassky, Klepikovsky and Ryazan districts). With the help of monitoring of lands by the phytoindication method (biotesting by the length of...

Phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic assessment of hydroquinone using plant and animal bioassays.

Hydroquinone (HQ) is a phenolic compound widely used in industrial processes and recognized as a priority pollutant. However, information on its ecotoxicological effects on plants and aquatic organisms remains limited. This study evaluated the toxicity of HQ using bioassays with the plant species Allium cepa and Lactuc...

Model experiment to assess the effect of oil-destructor strain Pseudomonas schmalbachii N3.1 and remediant plants on the biological activity of soil contaminated with oil and herbicides

The increasing demand for energy sources is leading to greater contamination of soils, including agricultural, by oil products. It requires the search for effective methods to restore the disturbed territories. This study evaluates the effectiveness of using the hydrocarbon-degrading strain Pseudomonas schmalbachii N3....
