Abstract
The article examines the ecological functions of forests — water protection, soil protection, and climate-regulating. Based on an analysis of domestic and foreign sources, it is shown that forests play a key role in regulating hydrological regimes, preventing erosion and soil degradation, as well as in the global carbon cycle and climate formation. Special attention is paid to the impact of natural (fires) and anthropogenic (logging, industrial pollution, recreational load) factors, which significantly weaken the ecological potential of forest ecosystems. It is shown that to restore impaired functions, it is necessary to create artificial plantations of valuable deciduous species and maintain biodiversity. The insufficient development of methods for the ecological-economic assessment of the "weightless" benefits of forests is noted. The conclusion is made about the need for an integrated interdisciplinary approach to forest management in the context of global climate change.
Deforestation is one of the most serious environmental challenges of the twenty-first century because forests are closely connected with climate regulation, biodiversity, water resources, soil conservation and human livelihoods. Forests absorb and store carbon dioxide, regulate local and regional rainfall, protect soil...

Forest degradation and desertification are closely connected components of a broader socio-ecological problem in which land-use pressure, climatic stress and declining ecosystem resilience interact across landscapes. Forest degradation does not necessarily involve complete removal of tree cover; it may occur through bi...

Riparian ecosystems of the Kura River combine aquatic habitats, floodplain vegetation and Tugai forests that support biodiversity, water regulation, soil stability and local economic activity. This study integrates two author-prepared research projects: one examining the effects of human activities on river ecosystems...

The importance of soil in maintaining environmental flows and preserving biodiversity has been underestimated in many cases. However, research that takes an eclectic approach that considers both water and soil has demonstrated the importance of this information. It is essential to recognize the hydrological characteris...

The growing demand for renewable energy sources has driven the establishment of fast-growing energy forests, mainly of the genera Eucalyptus and Pinus, managed under short rotations and reduced spacing. Although this model maximizes biomass production per unit area, it raises relevant questions about its ecological, nu...
