A compact degeneracy-aware back-end update for FAST-LIO2 is presented, which replaces hard truncation with a sigmoid soft weight, splits the pose Jacobian into rotation and translation blocks, and assigns each block an adaptive threshold proportional to its dominant singular value.

Abstract

LiDAR-inertial odometry (LIO) is easily degraded in geometrically degenerate scenes such as tunnels, subway corridors, and long roadside passages, where the observation Jacobian becomes ill-conditioned and the filter over-trusts poorly constrained directions. Existing SVD-based Jacobian remapping suppresses degenerate directions by hard truncating small singular values, but the hard cut-off causes update discontinuity, couples rotation and translation in one decomposition, and depends on a fixed threshold that is difficult to transfer across scenes. This paper presents a compact degeneracy-aware back-end update for FAST-LIO2. The method replaces hard truncation with a sigmoid soft weight, splits the pose Jacobian into rotation and translation blocks, and assigns each block an adaptive threshold proportional to its dominant singular value. Experiments on three WHU-Helmet sequences show that the proposed method consistently reduces vertical drift against FAST-LIO2 and DALI-LIO while maintaining real-time speed

Degeneracy-Aware Intensity-Assisted LiDAR–Inertial Odometry with Adaptive Photometric Weighting

LiDAR–inertial odometry (LIO) is accurate in structurally rich environments but can become weakly observable in tunnels, stairways, and open terrain. This study introduces a degeneracy-aware, intensity-assisted LIO method that uses LiDAR reflectivity as an internal sensing modality without requiring a camera. Raw retur...

OCE: an optimization convergence metric for LiDAR SLAM degeneracy detection

LiDAR-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems suffer from environment-induced degeneracy in geometrically self-similar scenes such as tunnels and cylindrical structures, where the point cloud registration problem becomes ill-conditioned. Existing degeneracy detection methods predominantly rely on eig...

GLIO2: A GPU-Parallelized Tightly-Coupled LiDAR-Inertial-GNSS System for Robust and Real-Time Global Localization and Mapping

Globally consistent, real-time state estimation in large-scale, perceptually degraded environments is essential for autonomous vehicles and aerial robots, and requires fusing LiDAR, inertial, and GNSS measurements. Existing fusion methods, however, share a scan-to-map front-end with two failure modes. First, each scan...
