Lean-burn engines are designed to reduce emissions, and sustainable alternative fuels provide additional potential for lowering particle emissions. However, the magnitude of the benefits from these mitigation levers remains poorly constrained, limiting robust predictions of aviation’s climate impact. We present in-flight measurements of particle emissions from modern lean-burn LEAP-1A engines operated on Airbus A319neo and A321neo aircraft, burning conventional and sustainable aviation fuels. Emissions of nonvolatile particles larger than 14 nanometers from lean-burn engines were reduced by three orders of magnitude compared to rich-burn operation. Under rich-burn conditions, soot particle number emissions show an exponential dependence on fuel hydrogen content, with engine-specific variations. Volatile particle emissions scale with fuel sulfur content, and substantial differences were observed even between two engines of the same type. Optimizing fuel composition and combustor technology may reduce particle emissions, improve airport air quality, and mitigate contrail radiative forcing.
The transition to alternative fuels offers a promising pathway to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint. This study investigates the impact of replacing conventional jet fuel with power-to-liquid hydrogen ([Formula: see text]), power-to-liquefied natural gas (Pt-LNG), power-to-liquefied petroleum gas (Pt-LPG), and...

Burning fossil fuels for different applications and requirements emits harmful emissions into the atmosphere. As a result, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increase, and climate change is observed worldwide. Stringent environmental regulations have been proposed and implemented across all fossil fuel-using sectors...

Radically reducing the carbon footprint of civil aviation by 2050 may not be possible via technological advancements on aircraft and propulsion system level alone, but with the combined effort of the integration of alternative fuels and carbon offsetting strategies. The paper examines potential decarbonisation path...

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) offer a promising solution to reduce the environmental impact of aviation; yet, their behaviour in aero-engine combustors remains difficult to predict due to the effects of their composition on spray dynamics and chemical kinetics. In this work, large eddy simulations (LES) are perfor...

This study examines the environmental footprint using several criteria for a dual-fuel compression ignition engine fueled with hydrogen-enriched natural gas (HCNG) and diesel pilot injection. Exhaust emissions, including detailed particle size distributions (10 nm to 10 μm) via a Dekati ELPI+ system, were coupled with...
