If strategically adopted, NEP can strengthen Ayurveda’s role in evidence-based healthcare and position it as a cornerstone of India’s educational renaissance.
Abstract
Background: The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 introduces comprehensive reforms in Indian higher education, emphasizing multidisciplinary learning, research orientation, and global competitiveness. Ayurveda, as a traditional knowledge system, stands at a critical juncture to align with these reforms while preserving its classical identity.
Methods: This editorial undertakes a policy analysis of NEP 2020 in the context of Ayurvedic education. It reviews key provisions of the policy and interprets their relevance to curriculum design, pedagogy, and institutional frameworks within Ayurveda.
Results: NEP 2020 offers opportunities for integration of Ayurveda with biomedical sciences, flexible entry-exit pathways, digital pedagogy, and enhanced research validation. Specialized branches such as Agada Tantra can benefit from interdisciplinary linkages with toxicology, forensic sciences, and public health. Challenges include curriculum standardization, faculty training, and infrastructural readiness.
Conclusion: NEP 2020 represents a paradigm shift for Ayurvedic education. Its successful implementation requires balancing tradition with modernity, ensuring audit-ready compliance, and fostering global recognition. If strategically adopted, NEP can strengthen Ayurveda’s role in evidence-based healthcare and position it as a cornerstone of India’s educational renaissance.
