Abstract

merrypopins is a Python library that streamlines nanoindentation data processing, automated pop-in detection, and statistical analysis of collections of pop-in events.Nanoindentation deforms materials experimentally to characterise their behaviour and quantify mechanical properties from load-displacement data (Oliver & Pharr, 1992, 2004).Experiments performed with a spherical tip can also be used to construct stress-strain curves and, by extension, determine the yield point, defining the transition from elastic to plastic deformation (Kalidindi & Pathak, 2008;Pathak & Kalidindi, 2015).Understanding the onset of plasticity at the microscale matters for applications in engineered materials and earthquake mechanics.A common feature during the loading part of these experiments is a sudden increase of indentation depth at constant force, called a "pop-in".Recognising pop-ins by hand is labour-intensive and subjective, which makes automated, reproducible detection important.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

Trajectory Balance: Improved Credit Assignment in GFlowNets

It is proved that any global minimizer of the trajectory balance objective can define a policy that samples exactly from the target distribution, and empirically demonstrate the benefits of the trajectories balance objective for GFlowNet convergence, diversity of generated samples, and robustness to long action sequenc...

What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us

Jennifer Neville did not want to go into computer science—but that’s exactly where she landed. Neville discusses the starts and stops that led to her professional sweet spot and her work identifying “surprising failures” making it hard for AI to handle complexity.  The post What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us appeared first on Microsoft Research.
