Human-Centric AI-Driven Sustainable and Resilient Design AI for Energy-efficient and Carbon-neutral Buildings

Building Energy and Comfort Optimization

Abstract

This chapter examines how Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence is transforming sustainable and resilient design in the built environment. With buildings responsible for nearly 40% of global energy use and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, the chapter underscores the need for energy-efficient and carbon-neutral architectural solutions. Human-centric AI integrates explainable Artificial Intelligence, human-in-the-loop decision-making, and participatory design to ensure transparency, ethical alignment, and user-driven sustainability. Artificial Intelligence-enabled predictive energy optimization, reinforcement learning heating ventilation air conditioning control, and digital twin–based lifecycle carbon assessment significantly reduce operational and embodied carbon. In parallel, generative design and parametric modeling support climate-adaptive strategies—from passive cooling and flood-resilient layouts to low-carbon material selection. The chapter also highlights Artificial Intelligence-driven infrastructure risk modeling, combining hazard prediction, multi-hazard simulation, and scenario-based planning to enhance resilience. Collectively, these approaches position human-centric Artificial Intelligence as essential for achieving net-zero, adaptive, and resource-efficient built environments.
