Artificial Intelligence in Academic Writing in Higher Education: A Systematic Literature Review of Pedagogical Integration, Assessment Practices, and Teachers' Perspectives

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming academic writing in higher education by enhancing teaching practices, writing assessment, and student learning. Despite the growing adoption of AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, PaperPal, and Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) systems, existing research remains fragmented across pedagogical, assessment, and teacher-related perspectives. This study systematically reviews the current evidence on AI in academic writing using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines. Guided by four research questions formulated through the PICo framework, a comprehensive search of Scopus and Web of Science identified 236 records, from which 24 peer-reviewed studies published between 2021 and 2026 met the inclusion criteria following screening, eligibility assessment, and quality appraisal. The findings reveal three dominant themes: (1) AI integration in academic writing teaching and learning, (2) AI-assisted assessment, feedback, and writing evaluation, and (3) teachers' perspectives, ethical issues, and AI adoption. Collectively, the reviewed studies demonstrate that AI enhances writing quality, learner engagement, self-regulated learning, and formative assessment through timely and personalized feedback. However, AI remains limited in evaluating higher-order writing competencies, including critical thinking, originality, and contextual reasoning, reinforcing the continued importance of human expertise in writing assessment. The review further highlights the influence of teachers' perceptions, ethical concerns, and institutional readiness on successful AI implementation. The study contributes a comprehensive synthesis of current research by integrating pedagogical, assessment, and human perspectives through the TPACK, Assessment for Learning, and Technology Acceptance Model frameworks. These findings provide practical implications for educators, institutions, and policymakers while identifying priorities for future research on responsible and pedagogically sound AI integration in academic writing within higher education.

Artificial Intelligence in Language Education in the Generative-AI Era: A Systematic Integrative Review of Pedagogical Evidence, Methodological Quality, and Responsible Adoption

Artificial intelligence has grown quickly in language teaching, particularly since the introduction of generative AI and large language models. Even so, the existing evidence is dispersed across various technologies, teaching applications, learner groups, and research approaches. This systematic integrative review examined 40 primary empirical or technical studies. It also used 15 systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and bibliometric syntheses to provide contextual evidence. The selected publications were published between 2017 and July 2026, while the majority of the primary evidence appeared after 2022. The review employed descriptive mapping, thematic synthesis, design-sensitive methodological assessment, and framework development. The primary papers were evaluated based on AI technology, educational application, language skill, learner group, research design, outcome type, multilingual representation, methodological quality, and ethical or governance concerns. Writing assistance, automated feedback, speaking practice, learner perceptions, teacher support, and AI-assisted pedagogy were the most extensively researched topics. In contrast, reading, listening, younger learners, low-resource languages, delayed learning outcomes, and validation across contexts received less attention. The evidence points to potential short-term improvements for writing revision, speaking practice, motivation, engagement, and teacher support. However, confidence in these findings is limited because many studies used small sample sizes, brief interventions, single-institution settings, self-reported measures, incomplete model and prompt reporting, and minimal external validation. Generative systems increased interactivity, adaptability, and task coverage but also introduced output variability, hallucination, authorship ambiguity, privacy risk, and reproducibility problems. Based on the integrated findings, the review proposes a responsible-adoption framework connecting AI-system characteristics, pedagogical design, human–AI interaction, contextual conditions, educational outcomes, and institutional governance. The findings indicate that educational value depends less on technological novelty than on task alignment, teacher mediation, learner agency, methodological rigour, multilingual inclusion, and accountable human oversight.

Artificial intelligence in education: Possibilities and challenges for pedagogical practice

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought about significant changes in the educational landscape, driven primarily by the advancement of generative models and the increasing availability of tools capable of supporting teaching and learning processes. This study aimed to analyze the main possibilities and challenges associated with AI in pedagogical practice through a structured narrative literature review. Searches were conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, ERIC, SciELO, and Google Scholar, prioritizing publications from 2019 to 2026, while earlier foundational sources were retained when methodologically or conceptually relevant. The final interpretive corpus comprised 31 core sources, including peer-reviewed empirical studies, systematic and scoping reviews, meta-analyses, and institutional guidance. Evidence was synthesized into four themes: evolution and educational applications of AI, pedagogical potential, ethical and institutional challenges, and the changing role of teachers. The literature identifies opportunities for personalized learning, pedagogical planning, accessibility, formative assessment, and teaching-material development, but also recurring concerns involving information reliability, academic integrity, privacy, algorithmic bias, digital inequality, and teacher preparedness. Recent evidence indicates that positive outcomes are heterogeneous and depend on pedagogical scaffolding, human verification, institutional governance, and AI literacy. AI should therefore be understood as a supportive educational technology rather than a substitute for teacher mediation. Its integration requires critical, ethical, and pedagogically grounded use that preserves student autonomy, assessment validity, and educational equity.

Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: A Critical Synthesis of Student Learning, Assessment Transformation, and Academic Integrity

The review concludes that artificial intelligence should be treated as a socio-technical component of curriculum and assessment rather than a stand-alone productivity tool, because its educational legitimacy depends on whether institutions can preserve epistemic agency, valid judgement of learning, equitable access, and accountable human responsibility.
